V1 - NTNE01Z01DS ADVERTORIAL THE ESSINGTON SCHOOL DARWIN SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS National and international research shows the importance of physical activity and sport is stronger than ever. Highly active children are less likely to suffer a wide range of diseases later in life. The Essington School Darwin has a comprehensive sporting program for its students. This provides opportunities for students to participate in many sports at school in House competitions, interschool, community and international level. Principal David Cannon said: We aim to provide as many opportunities as possible for students to participate in sport within the School, with other schools and within the local and national community. We feel it is important for students to experience the benefits of being in a team as well as being a solo competitor. Many of our students participate in community sporting clubs and represent the School, school zone, Darwin and the Northern Territory in various sporting activities each year. House Sport At The Essington School Darwin, House sporting competitions provide students with the opportunity to try different sports that they may not normally be able to access. The House sporting competitions also provide opportunities for student leadership and affirmation. Angela Foley, Director of School Sport, said: Sport is not just exercise, it gives students more than just physical well-being. Playing sport and being part of a team helps a childs development socially and emotionally. It can help develop their self-esteem and self-worth. The House Sport program allows students to participate in a wider variety of sports during a school year. It also provides opportunities for students to participate in sport leadership within the school. Students are members of one of three School Houses who compete against each other throughout the year. The two major House sporting carnivals are held each year: House Athletics in Semester One, and House Swimming in Semester Two. Elite Sports Students The School also supports students who have demonstrated a high level of sporting talent in a sport through its Elite Sports Program. At the beginning of 2016, experienced sports educator and coach, Tim Weatherald, was appointed to the position of Director of Elite and Community Sport. High achieving sports students are supported by Tim in planning their academic program around their sporting commitments. The Director of Elite and Community Programs also collaborates closely with these students, their parents, teachers, and state and national sporting bodies. Inter School Sport The Essington School Darwin has a strong commitment to interschool sport and participates in almost all interschool sport competitions offered by NT Schools Sport. The Essington School Darwin participates in almost every interschool sporting competition available. Students who participate in NT School Sport competitions are eligible to represent their School Zone in their particular sport. This may lead to selection for the Northern Territory team in a sport, and the chance to represent the Northern Territory at a national level. Angela Foley, Director of School Sport, said Every child can be successful at one sport or another. We encourage students to find the sports that are right for them and do this through our House, school and community sporting programs. Community Sports In 2014 The Essington School Darwin started a school basketball club to play in the Darwin Basketball Association (DBA) competition on week nights and Saturday. The Cannons Basketball Club now field boys and girls teams in the Under 12s, Under 14s, Under 16s, and Under 18s Age Groups. A group of Under 10 students is currently being trained to join the Darwin Basketball Association competition. Tim Weatherald, Director of Elite and Community Sport, said: The School encourages and supports students to play in a variety of different sports with local community sports Clubs out of school hours. We have been able to work with a large number of community sporting clubs to introduce our students to these Clubs. International Sports Programs The Schools basketball club participates annually in the International Junior High School Basketball Competition in Malaysia. Other playing opportunities in Asia, in the international school community and national clubs, is being negotiated in Indonesia and the Philippines. The School hopes to extend these programs to other sports. For further information about The Essington School Darwin sports program or the School, please contact enrolments@ essington.nt.edu.au.
