Sam trumped the session with a magnificent 3kg tusk fish. We also landed plenty of cod and stripes and were busted off by some much larger fish. We decided to head over to Cape Ford to try for a couple of goodies. As we approached, we noticed acres of long tail tuna feeding. I had not seen such large schools of these fish for many years. We Peron power I RECENTLY fished the Peron Islands with my son Sam for a couple of days over the neap tides. We left from Dundee Beach ramp and flew across Fog Bay over extremely calm seas. I had not fished the Perons for some time and was looking forward to showing Sam the area. We headed wide off Point Blaze first on our way to the Perons to tangle with a few schools of mack tuna. They were fun and provided plenty of sport. Gillies 40g slices did the damage and it was not long before we had landed several each. We continued south towards Bateman Shoal west of the North Peron. We decided to tie on some Berkley gulps and try for a couple of reef fish. I deployed my Minn Kota electric motor over a good lump of reef and we soon were showed great restraint and stuck to the plan of trying to jig up some nice golden snapper. However, as we started to drift over a good patch of reef my sounder showed up monstrous schools of fish below the boat which turned out to be golden trevally and long tail tuna. We could not get a Gulp to the bottom with all the pelagic action on the way down. We were fishing with our barra combos and having a great time trying to subdue numerous trevally around 5kg before my Berkley powerbait soft plastic was scoffed by a big fish. It powered off over the horizon on a run that almost emptied my spool. I thumbed the beast on numerous occasions before finally landing a nice long tail tuna that pulled the scales down to 9kg.
