SUNDAY JUNE 12 2016 SPORT 61 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA Aspleys Henry Joyce clashes with the Thunders Shannon Rioli during the Territorys big win in Brisbane yesterday Picture: DARREN ENGLAND THE legend of Darren Boof Ewing has another chapter. The lumpy spearhead booted eight goals including three in the first seven minutes of the second term to inspire NT Thunder to an 18.16 (114) to 10.9 (69) triumph yesterday over Aspley in Brisbane. The Territorians have won six of their past seven matches against the Hornets, most famously the one-point result in last years NEAFL grand final. They also leapfrog Aspley into second spot going into the bye. Ewing failed to get a kick in the opening quarter, which must have made Thunder coach Xavier Clarke doubt the decision to bring his full-forward with him after he spent time in hospital with an ear infection in the lead-up. But Ewing sprang to life at the start of the second quarter and kicked four of the visitors seven majors for the term most after perfectly timed leads as they established a 42-point half-time lead. Boof fires in Thunder rout seven clashes with them. I was a little concerned about whether to fly (Ewing) or not, but he texted me late on Thursday night to say he was right to go, Clarke said. I took his word for it and kicking eight is a great effort. Clarke compared the road victory and performance to his clubs success over UWS Giants in Sydney in Round 5. I thought it was a great effort over four quarters and we havent done that all season, the ex-AFL player said. The only (third quarter) concern for me was we started to lose the centre-square bounces, but we adjusted and got the momentum back our way. Cam Ilett (27 disposals) was outstanding in an unfamiliar half-back role, while Richard Tambling (24, 10 clearances) turned in what Clarke called his best game of the year. Matt Rosier (24), Ben Rioli (23), ruckman Seb Guilhaus who took two towering marks and Justin Cooper also impressed. Matt Payne (31), Declan Bevan (18) and Toye (24) were among the Hornets best. MARC McGOWAN NT THUNDER V ASPLEY He also slotted a pair of steadiers in the next quarter, just when the Hornets were mounting a challenge. They got within 16 points and would have been closer if Reece Toye had not missed a sitter after Jared Brennan gave away a 50m penalty before Thunder nailed six of the last seven goals to win by 45 points. Ewing also kicked eight sixpointers against Aspley in Round 3 and has amassed a combined 41 across his last 114NT THUNDER4.1 11.3 14.6 18.16 69ASPLEY3.1 4.3 9.8 10.9 GOALS Thunder: D Ewing 8 J Cooper 2 L Patrick 2 L Bath 2 N Vea Vea E Frank C Ilett M Hagan Aspley: D Bevan 3 A Hughes 2 E Sansbury 2 H Joyce J Ives W Wolbers BEST Thunder: D Ewing C Ilett R Tambling M Rosier B Rioli S Guilhaus Aspley: M Payne D Bevan R Toye J Ives J Williams J Allen For full terms and conditions see ntnews.com.au/competitions.
