SUNDAY MAY 29 2016 SPORT 57 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA last year and a player Stosur has historically struggled against. Following the 6-3, 6-7 (0), 7-5 win just her fourth against the 11th seed Safarova from 15 matches Stosur declared it was a welcome return to the sort of form which took her to the 2010 SUNDAY MAY 29 2016 SPORT 57 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA THE last remaining Aussie at the French Open, Samantha Stosur, believes her claycourt game is as red hot as it was when she stormed to the final six years ago. Stosur wound back the clock with a stirring three-set victory over 11th seed Lucie Safarova, a finalist in Paris TWIN tons from veteran PINT duo Simon Lavers and Marc Calkin has pushed the Greens into a commanding position after day one against Waratah at Marrara yesterday. In the first two-day game of 2016, Greens skipper Calkin won the toss and elected to bat and in the in-form Lavers got straight to work. Lavers, who made 196 against Palmerston a fortnight ago, was less destructive yesterday against Tahs but he was still as influential. The opening batsman was eventually dismissed for 129 from 189 balls, with the Greens in a strong position at 3-234. Lavers hit 12 boundaries and one maximum in a truly spectacular innings. Lavers did his work in the early afternoon, while Calkin got going as the day went on, hitting 11 boundaries in his un PINT batsman Simon Lavers on his way to an eye-catching 129 yesterday Picture: HELEN ORR Waratah battle to restrict PINT 26.5 overs as Nathan Hangan top scored with 20, batting at number nine. Young Villagers bowler Nicholas Patterson, who is starting to hit his straps in Top End cricket, did the damage, taking 4-19 from 10 overs and two more later in the day. South Australian recruit Patterson has taken 15 wickets over the past month after a lean start to the season. One of Pattersons mates from down south, Isaac Boylan, spent some much needed time in the middle, topscoring for the Villagers with 42. Imposing Crocs quick Joshua Dunning took 5-35 to knock over the Villagers for 129. The Crocs were 2-15 a second time at stumps on day one. At Cazalys Oval, Palmerstons miserable season continued as they were knocked over for just 57 by Nightcliff. The Tigers were 8-300 in reply at the end of play. beaten 125 at the end of play. The Greens prized recruit, Ben Wakim, had a rare Darwin and District Cricket Competition failure with the bat, making 14 but it did not matter with Lavers and Calkin on song. Tahs spinners Bradley Schmulian and James Seymour bowled 64 of their 90 overs in the field, while quick John Semaan did not bowl, despite fielding. Calkin said the challenge was for his side to bowl well next Saturday. Lavers batted really well again, it was the type of wicket where once you get in, it was easier to score on, Calkin said. We need to come back on day two and bowl well. Meanwhile, 22 wickets fell at Tracy Village Oval as Southern Districts were brought down by poor shot selection and the hosts did not fair much better with the bat. The Crocs were rolled for just 59 through JORDAN GERRANS STOSUR RECKONS SHES STILL GOT IT final against Francesca Schiavone and the semifinals in 2009 and 2012. Meanwhile, Nick Kyrgios plunged out of the French Open at the hands of nemesis Richard Gasquet in a sobering reminder of the unforgiving nature of grand slam tennis. Stuart, who left Parramatta to coach the Raiders after the sacking of David Furner, has wasted no time stamping his authority on his new team, training them in 40C heat and sending them to a week-long elite training camp. The former NSW and Australia coach has seen big potential for McCrone at hooker. Faith inMoses to deliver title MOSES Wigness has taken over the reins again at Brothers Rugby League club for the 2014 season. Wigness, who coached the club for three years and won the 2010 and 2011 premierships, replaces Anthoiny Castro who had held the position for the past two seasons. The clubs seniors sign-on day is at Airport Tavern today from 1pm. Brothers spokesman John Adams said the club wanted to regain the premiership that they lost to Palmerston last year. New rules to endmass debates MANLY coach Geoff Toovey says captain Jamie Lyon wont have to change his on-field approach to referees despite recent NRL rule changes. Lyon and Canterburys Michael Ennis are seen as two of the games leading debaters when it comes to arguing with match officials. But they are set to be stymied by a new law that limits where and when captains can speak to refs. Under new rules captains will only be able to speak to refs during a stoppage in play. Lachlan schooled by Shark RUGBY LEAGUE ByDOUGBOOTH MacKillop Sharks centre Levi Russell with student Lachlan Miller at the merger announcement yesterday Picture: JUSTIN SANSON LACHLAN Miller wants to play senior rugby league when he grows up. The MacKillop Catholic College student discovered plenty of ways to help him reach that goal from the now MacKillop Sharks hardtackling centre Levi Russell yesterday. Lachlan, 13, and Russell, 22, were integral parts of the launch to merge the Sharks with the Palmerstonbased college. I like rugby league because of the teamwork that is involved in playing, said Lachlan, who has been playing the game for four years. It is not just a one-man game. I like running with the ball and scoring tries. Russell said young players such as Lachlan were the future of the 13-a-side game. We are looking for a premiership this season and building links such as this is vital for the future, he said. College principal Loretta Graham said MacKillop was trying to build a community spirit through sporting organisations and this was another step forward. David Graham is the Year 8 music co-ordinator at MacKillop but his other passion is rugby league. Growing up in Cairns, he played his first rugby league in Queensland and last year he was with the Palmerston Raiders. However, as the brainchild behind the merger of the school and club, he has new allegiances. The Palmerston demographic is much different to Darwin, Graham said. Queensland and NSW influence the culture. Graham said the merger would help provide a grassroots pathway that had not existed before in rugby league in the Northern Territory. It is important that we try and bridge the gap between school and club, he said. The Sharks will hold their senior sign-on at Mary MacKillop School today from 10am. Read an exclusive interview with Darwins Joel Romelo in tomorrows SundayTerritorian.
