TUESDAY MAY 24 2016 COMMUNITY 13 V1 - NTNE01Z01DS AS many Darwin residents are now aware the 2016/17 Municipal Plan has been announced. This years budget aims to deliver key projects which contribute to establishing Darwin as a tropical, liveable city that creates opportunity and choice for our community. Councils operating expenditure and capital works program represents a total spend of $144 million in the coming year. Council worked hard to minimise this years rate rise to just 2.75 per cent. So, for a property which has a land value of $365,000, rates have increased by $40.32 a year. Highlights of the plan include $12.3 million to the Parap Pool Redevelopment, $9.8 million towards a major upgrade for the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility, $4 million for air conditioning system at the Darwin Entertainment Centre and $3.6 million to continue our free library service. Also, an additional $300,000 has been allocated towards street cleaning for the CBD and suburban shopping centres. Council has also allocated $2 million to road resurfacing, $1.8 million to shared pathways and $940,000 to add shade structures to a further 22 playgrounds across our suburbs. The draft 2016/2017 Municipal Plan is now available for public consultation for 21 days and the Darwin community is invited to provide feedback by 5pm Wednesday, June 8. In other news, Library and Information Week comes to the NT this week until Friday May 27. The week aims to raise the profile of libraries across Australia. To celebrate, show your library card to get free travel all day on the public bus routes in Darwin, Palmerston and Alice Springs.
