News 18 SUN NEWSPAPERS, Tuesday, May 24, 2016 NTNE01Z01DS - V1 surrounding the growing characteristics and needs of the plants. Take note of what is happening in your own plot to get the most out of it, as it may be quite different to another garden that is growing exactly the same plants with exactly the same design. Gardens evolve over time and no garden ever stays the same once it has been established, as it will go through different stages and different looks throughout the years. Maintenance is a necessary task to keep the gardens appeal when plants are fully mature. It may also be necessary to re-evaluate the overall look by, for example, trimming, thinning out or replacing plants. Whatever your choice of garden design, having a plan of what you would like to achieve from the outset may save you dollars and disappointment in the future. Thinking about palliative care SUNDAY saw the beginning of National Palliative Care Week, seven days Australia pauses to appreciate the people who provide quality care at the end of life. The theme for National Palliative Care this year is Living Well With Chronic Illness. This addresses the need for people with advanced chronic illness to be able to access palliative care. Palliative Care Australia is the peak national body for palliative care. Palliative Care Northern Territory has committees in the Top End and Alice Springs, with committed and active group of members. If anyone interested in be coming a member of Palliative Care Top End please call Robyn on 0450 785 338 or Annette on 0417 840 611. Planning can make perfect With a little planning and patience, it is possible to have a stunning garden with myriad species here in the Top End CREATING your own garden design is an exciting and rewarding experience especially when it all comes together just as you planned. Plan and visualise your garden in its mature stage to get a true image of what the end result will look like. Avoid the temptation in the beginning to fill in the bare gaps, or place plants close together to achieve a fuller look. Give plants time to grow for your overall plan to come to fruition as it will be well worth it in the long term. Avoid the temptation of randomly adding plants that are not part of your original garden design, or plants that do not complement it. Prior to planting, place the potted plants in the areas where they are to grow to get an idea of spacing and a preview of your planting design. Ensure holes are suitably deep and wide enough to encourage strong root development and to give your plants the best possible start to a healthy life. Apply light fertiliser (optional at this stage), water in well and cover with mulch to preserve moisture and promote soil conditioning. Many gardeners are often too eager to see their plants grow overnight, but the real pleasure and enjoyment is in the process of patiently waiting and watching each plant grow and develop over their natural course. Valuable horticultural lessons can be observed each month in your garden, Gardens evolve over time and no garden ever stays the same once it has been established What Are You Doing Tonight?
