Sport 32 SUN NEWSPAPERS, Tuesday, May 24, 2016 NTNE01Z01DS - V1 JACK HISLOP A PGA golf tournament could help put Palmerston on the map as an international sporting hub, according to NT Sports Minister Nathan Barrett. The Australasian PGA tour will head to Palmerston Golf Course in August. Barrett announced the inaugural championship last week, alongside PGA of Australia CEO Brian Thorburn. He said he hoped the event would keep tourists in the Top End for longer during the Darwin dry season sports calendar. The time of year is something that we need to look at, because a lot of really great events happen through the dry season, he said. Things like the Darwin Cup which is a premier event in the NT, something like a PGA tour coming in the back or the front of that, might actually keep punters here in the NT. Keeping those bed nights up and keeping those restaurants busy will get an even better return in the economy, through all of these events working together with synergy. Barrett hoped the event would showcase Palmerston as an international sporting hub. I think we need to promote Darwin and Palmerston as somewhere that has got very good facilities, he said. One of the things we like to do here is promote sport at the highest level, as we have done with the AFL, rugby league and V8 supercars. Thorburn expressed his delight at being able to bring the Australasian PGA to the Top PGA Australia CEO Brian Thorburn is thrilled the Australasian PGA tour is headed to the Top End HOLE IN ONE FOR PALMO End. Weve been aspiring to have a championship in the NT for several years and its a great thrill for us and all of our members, he said. We come to governments and we say what were delivering is a direct economic injection just from having our players, officials and inbound tourists stimulating economic activity within the hospitality industry. The 72-hole championship will run from August 11-14.
