Yesterday Willem Westra van Holthe faced the media in the same room after his sacking from the ministry. He refused to take questions and didnt accept any wrongdoing in relation to his pursuit of Vietnamese investments. To blame was a personal smear campaign and the negative press and the internal naval gazing that took the focus off the business of government. Sources have told the NT News Mr Westra van Holthe refused to resign for several days, despite pressure from his colleagues that began after a disastrous Question Time performance on Thursday. On Friday, Chief Minister GENERAL INQUIRIES: 8944 9900 l CLASSIFIEDS: 8944 9999 l CIRCULATION: 8944 9901 l ADVERTISING: 8944 9801 ONLINE: www.ntnews.com.au l EDITORIAL EMAIL: news@ntnews.com.au l OTHER INQUIRIES: online@ntnews.com.au Willem falls on sword after some prodding Adam Giles told him point blank to go. The following day he effectively sacked the Member for Katherine, who the NT News understands still did not want to walk away. Mr Westra van Holthe told his staff of his decision to resign on Saturday night and held a press conference in Darwin yesterday. The NT News understands Business Minister Peter Styles is the frontrunner to become Deputy Chief Minister and a vote will be held at a CLP wing meeting today. Internally, the dumping of Mr Westra van Holthe has reasserted the authority of Chief Minister Adam Giles. Internal tensions have died down within the CLP wing since February last year, when Mr Westra van Holthe briefly took power, only to back down from his challenge. The assorted egos collec tively decided after those events to pull their heads in, with an election approaching, and forged an uneasy truce. As the revelations about Mr Westra van Holthes dealings with Vietnamese company CT Group emerged last week, including that he signed a share offer worth $570,000 but never submitted the form, most thought Mr Giles lacked the authority with the wing to make a captains call and sack his former leadership rival. On Wednesday, that sort of action would have opened some old wounds. By the weekend, MLAs had begun to worry about their own re-election chances and several urged Mr Westra van Holthe to leave. The shift in the dynamic empowered Mr Giles to insist on his deputys resignation. Mr Westra van Holthe gave no clues about whether he intended to remain in politics beyond the next election. CLP sources are understood to be actively considering disendorsing the Member for Katherine with just six months until polling day. I would like to say on the record that I am standing aside today because it is the right thing to do for the Country Liberal Party and for the Government, he said during a four-minute statement. However, it is by no means an admission of anything untowards. I stand by my com ments in Parliament earlier this week that I have never misused the taxpayers dollars in any way. Mr Westra van Holthe said his resignation from the job came after an extremely trying week ... both professionally and personally. I realise the negative press of the past week and the internal naval gazing has taken the focus off the fantastic work of this government, he said. The Member for Katherine said he would spend the next six months working damn hard for my constituents. He said he would also now address the personal drama that has plagued his political career. BEN SMEE and HAYLEY SORENSEN Deputy Chief Minister Willem Westra van Holthe resigns from the ministry Picture: ISABELLA MOORE WILLEM Westra van Holthes legacy will be as a punchline to political jokes. For several hours Mr Westra van Holthe was the Chief Minister Apparent, the least worst desperation option chosen by his colleagues in a moment of mango madness last year. He scheduled a swearing-in ceremony and was turned away. Then he backed down during a crunch wing meeting. Perhaps it was the same sort of performance anxiety that caused him to back out of the proposed share deal with Vietnamese company CT Group. His relationship with the Exit stage right, as a punchline company was problematic and, regardless of whether money changed hands, it made his public position untenable. His biggest problem, though, was the way he floundered when forced to explain himself. He claims his present partner, then employed as a secretary for CT Group, extended personal hospitality during a visit to Ho Chi Minh City. That included a plush hotel room the company included on its itinerary for the trip. According to Vietnam Online, a typical secretary in the country earns about $1500 to $1900 Australian dollars a year. A four-night stay at the Parkroyal Saigon at current prices would cost about $1000. Its not known what his partner earned and its certainly plausible she could have paid for the room herself. Lets not forget the time Mr Westra van Holthe got beaten up. Or the second time. Or the time he was photographed for the front page of the Katherine Times, jumping for joy at being selected as Deputy Chief Minister (the first time), only to lose the job after a week. Perhaps its best to leave the valedictory tributes to Chief Minister Adam Giles, who last year said: I dont believe that Willem Westra van Holthe has the capacity, capability, tenacity or the professionalism to be Chief Minister.
