Description

Made available via the Publications (Legal Deposit) Act 2004 (NT).; WRM Water & Environment (WRM) was commissioned by the Department of Lands & Planning (DLP) to undertake a flood study of the Todd River in the Alice Springs area. The aim of the study is to develop a 2 dimensional flood model, which allows flood flow in a complex flood plain to be modelled, to determine the extent and severity of riverine flooding in the town of Alice Springs and the Alice Springs rural area south of Heavitree Gap. The purpose of the study is to produce floodplain maps of the Alice Springs and its rural area for land use planning and counter – disaster purposes. This study is an extension of the Alice Springs Farms Area Floodplain Mapping Study (WRM, 2006), undertaken by WRM on behalf of the Department of Planning & Infrastructure in 2006 in order to develop detailed Todd River floodplain maps for the rural area south of Alice Springs.

0269-02-C1 12 October 2015 19 3.5 HISTORICAL FLOOD DATA It is understood that large floods occurred in Alice Springs in March 1910, December 1920, February 1921, March 1932 and January 1940. The largest flood on record is believed to have occurred in March 1910, where much of the then township was completely inundated. However the actual extent and depth of inundation are not known for this flood or for the other historic floods before 1983. Surveyed flood debris marks along the banks of the Charles and Todd rivers were available for for the March 1983 and March / April 1988 flood events. The surveyed flood debris marks from the 1988 flood event are shown on Power and Water Authority (PAWA) drawings 7/88, 8/88 and 9/88. Surveyed Debris marks from the March 1983 flood events are shown on PAWA drawings 29/83 and 28/83. 3.6 TOPOGRAPHIC DATA The following topographic data were available for the study: 1:250,000 topographic maps of Alice Springs (Map No: 5314) published by Geo-sciences Australia. 1:50,000 topographic maps of Angkarla (Map No: 5751-3), McGrath (Map No: 5651-2), Undoolya (Map No: 5750-4), Alice Springs (Map No: 5650-1), Simpsons Gap (Map No: 5650-4) and Amoonguna (Map No: 5650-2) published by Defence Imagery and Geospatial Imagery. 3m Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the study area, with a stated accuracy of +/- 0.2m (90% confidence), provided by Department of Lands and Planning. Survey data of key culverts, causeways and bridges within the study area, provided by Department of Planning and Infrastructure. Survey data of the Kilgariff development area, including Colonel Rose Drive and Stuart Highway, provided by Opus Consulting.
