NTNE01Z01MA - V1 Panda shot by mistake CHINA: Three men face up to 10 years in jail for killing a panda and selling its meat and paws. Two brothers shot the animal in a forest near Zhaotong, a city in Chinas Yunnan province, confessing to police they mistook the adult female for a more common species of bear. They proceeded to eat some of the bears meat before selling the rest to a trader, along with its paws. A panda skin, skull and liver were discovered at the brothers home. While there is a thriving black market trade in exotic animal parts in China, it is unusual to hear of panda meat being sold as the creatures are considered a national treasure. Paraplegics giant step BRITAIN: A man confined to a wheelchair five years ago is able to walk again after scientists reconnected his brain and legs. It is the first time a paraplegic patient who was completely paralysed from the waist down after a spinal cord injury has been able to walk without relying on manually operated robotic limbs. Neurosurgeons transmitted signals from the 26-year-old Americans brain to electrodes placed around both knees. The man stepped falteringly for 3.7m, while a harness prevented him from falling. Apology 18 WORLD FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25 2015 Lamas sexism shocks LONDON: According to the Dalai Lama, if a woman was to succeed him she must be very attractive otherwise shes not much use. Hes joking, right? Apparently not. His Holiness was being in terviewed by BBC reporter Clive Myrie while in London when he made the comments. After discussing issues including the migrant crisis in Europe and Middle East terrorism, Myrie asked the leader if a woman would succeed him. The Dalai Lama said he had been asked the same question by a French magazine reporter 15 years ago and he told her a woman could become the Dalai Lama but she would need to be very attractive. Looking slightly shocked Myrie replied: So you can only have a female Dalai Lama if theyre attractive? The Dalai Lama said if they werent attractive they were not much use. Youre joking, Im assuming, Myrie said. No, the Dalai Lama said. This isnt the first time His Holiness has made sexist com ments about women in regards to a future Dalai Lama. In May he told the UKs Sunday Times he may come back as a mischievous blonde woman adding that her face must be very attractive or nobody pay much attention. His Holiness has also been accused in the past of being homophobic. In his book Beyond Dogma he made statements such as: A sexual act is deemed proper when the couples use the organs intended for sexual intercourse and nothing else ... homosexuality is not improper in itself. What is improper is the use of organs already defined as inappropriate for sexual contact. However more recently His Holiness has come out in support of gay marriage. Speaking to Larry King, he said same-sex marriage was fine and homophobia and bullying were the real issues. Different form of sex? So long as its safe, OK! And fully agreed, OK! Bullied? Abused? Thats what is wrong. Thats a violation of human rights.
