MONDAY JUNE 22 2015 Fullwood tops despite red flag JORDAN McARDLE A MULTIPLE-CAR collision during the start of yesterday's Improved Production, Commodore Cup and HQ event saw an abrupt end to the race. The event was red-flagged in the hope of a reschedule later in the day, but time constraints meant the drivers didn't get back out on the track. It wasn't all doom and gloom however, with Territory young gun Bryce Fullwood (NT Shipping/Territory Fireanns) gaining the maximum 30 points in both completed races at Hidden Valley in the Commodore Cup class. The highly-rated 17-yearold swapped his usual Dunlop Series V8 Supercar for a Commodore Cup car at the weekend, putting the VH Holden through its paces around his home circuit. Fullwood, whose maiden Dunlop Series campaign resumes in three weeks at the Castrol EDGE Townsville 400, finished in times of 9:38.09 (seven-lap) and 8:16.45 (sixlap). Fellow local David Ling (Aussie Nascar Tours) also had a weekend to remember, finishing runner up in Race 1 and 2 for a total of 54 points. NT's Gavin Thompson (60 points) topped the HQ class with two wins from two races, with Marian Bujnowski the next best on 54 points. Tasmanian Ray Hislop was the dominant force in the Over 2L category to claim two wins, with Mark Ruta (South Australia) six points behind in second spot. Girraween-based Tim Playford was the best-placed Territorian on 44 points after securing a podium finish in Saturday afternoon's race. Local Keith Schulz and Simon Bulasch came second and third respectively in the Under 2L standings. They were both behind undefeated Queenslander Peter Cusato. Gerard Mcleod leads the VS Ute field down the straight at Hidden Valley yesterday in the race won by Mcleod. Ford's Chris Pither won the other race and Ryal Harris leads the championship standings after the weekend's latest round Picture: IVAN RACHMAN True blue pocket rockets fire AUSTRALIA'S largest racing category with the smallest cars the Aussie Racing Cars, aptly known as pocket rockets returned to Hidden Valley Raceway after a fiveyear hiatus. The superb and newly resurfaced track is probably best suited to the class. All weekend long their racing has amazed the spectators with three and four wide on many parts of the track. This weekend showcased not only the class but wellknown national and an international driver in Freddie Hunl While Hunt didn't have the best weekend racing it was great to see him mix it up with the local heroes. Paul Morris again proved he's fast in any car, dicing all weekend long with Toowoomba's Adam Uebergang and current series leader Brendan Pingel. Over 30 cars took to the circuit and managed to field the same number for each race, often attrition has a bearing on the race meetings. "We sometimes lose a car or two over the weekend, but this time everyone got through," category manager Brad Ward said. "We've had a ball in Darwin, we love it and we'll be back." Often the races finish within a second of each other, and the Top End event saw thousandths of a second gaps with cars battling side by side crossing the line at flag fall. After four races Uebergang took the top step of the podium with 16-yearold James Abela. Abela this year graduated into the Porsche GT Challenge but choose to come to Darwin to race Aussie Racing Cars. The class also celebrates the older drivers with a Masters Cup won by Adrian Flack, the rookie for the weekend was Myles Bond. NTNE01Z01MA - Vl
