Description

This report summarises marine megafauna (cetaceans, dugongs and marine turtles) strandings throughout the Northern Territory (NT) from June 2012 to June 2014 inclusively. Overall, 75 marine stranding events have been recorded over the past two years, this included; 60 marine turtles, nine dolphins, five dugongs and one whale. In 2012/2013 the Marine WildWatch program recorded seven marine mammal strandings and 47 marine reptile strandings. In 2013/2014 there were eight marine mammal strandings and 13 marine reptile strandings recorded. The turtle strandings consisted of five different species, whereas the dolphins accounted for four different species. Compared to other jurisdictions in Australia the number of strandings in the Northern Territory is relatively low.,
