WEDNESDAY APRIL 1 2015 ENTERTAINMENT 11 V1 - SUBE01Z01MA Retelling of Cinderella fits the Disney moral codes perfectly THE success of last years Maleficent has sparked a revival in all things Disney, resulting in a list of live-action fairytale remakes waiting in the wings for a new generation. The first of those features is perhaps the most famous of princesses, Cinderella. The rags to riches story is nothing new, either in fairytales or real life. Disney already has a beloved animated Cinderella feature, while her story has appeared reincarnated in other film versions that try to offer something different. Different is not what Disney is looking for when they set out to entertain a new group of young fans who are yet to have any association with the story. Director Kenneth Branagh is extremely aware of that, keeping the tale as simple as possible, tugging on the heartstrings to let the simple moral make itself known. To have courage and be kind are the two things Ella/Cinderella (Lily James) aims to uphold as she goes through life with her father. But when she is left with stepmother Lady Tremaine (Cate Blanchett) and stepsisters Drisella and Anastasia, those values are tested. Branaghs take on the tale leaves out no detail from the general story Cinderella unknowingly meets the prince of her kingdom (Richard Madden), theres Helena Bonham Carter doing her kooky take on the Fairy Godmother and a glass slipper doing the rounds. This film will appeal enormously to the kids, and to those who dont mind an amazing pair of blue eyes on a prince. The costuming and Cinderella (G) Stars: Lily James, Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter Lily James as Cinderella and Cate Blanchett as the wicked Stepmother in Disney's latest version. By KATINA VANGOPOULOS special effects dare it be said magically transport you to a kingdom far away. More emphasis on Cinderellas early years with her parents provides a stronger foundation for Lady Tremaines hatred of her stepdaughter, the film at its best when James expresses the feelings of her teenagers extreme loss and hopelessness. The casting produces good results James and Madden do well with their unknowingly flirtatious banter, while Blanchett is forceful as the evil stepmother, with a haughty presence throughout Cinderellas ordeal. Branaghs take the story at its core about acceptance and overcoming evil is at first hard to accept for its extreme purity. While an injection of more evil from Cinderellas new family could have taken the film to higher ground, it is simply not what Disney wanted or needed and it works well enough for anyone watching. see NeXT WeeKs PAPeR foR This WeeKs soluTioN ACROSS 1.
