SUNDAY MARCH 1 2015 ESCAPE 41 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA 30 ESCAPE SUNDAY MARCH 1 2015 ESCAPE.COM.AU TELE01Z01ES - V1 peacock, owl and squirrel motifs, all tangled in looping vines. The stripy Metropolitan Cathedral, which dominates Timisoaras town centre, is a bit annoying for its Byzantine style but, what the heck, is wonderfully atmospheric inside, with the Orthodox faithful taking time out from shopping for a moment of iconkissing and prayer. The cathedral eyeballs the opera house at the other end of a long square, Piata Victoriei. And what a square. Its maybe Europes most magnificent gathering of Art Nouveau, mostly outsized apartment blocks apparently designed to house giants. Facades are adorned with ceramics, folk art, sensuous plasterwork and recessed balconies. Elsewhere in Europe, youd be fighting the tourist hordes and losing an arm and leg for the pleasure of admiring such wonders from a cafe table. In Romania, youre in the minority. Join the locals Timisoara is a gossipy, cafelingering, laid-back sort of place and have a ridiculously cheap meal as the sun goes down, catching gold-leaf ornamentation on rooflines and cupolas. Yes, Art Nouveau is beautiful. But really, its maybe just an excuse to hang out in lovely places and while away the time. Travelling isnt about where you ought to go but about where your whims lead you. Just dont forget to look up and enjoy. Rek Palace, once a residential building and now an art centre, is considered one of Art Nouveaus best examples anywhere in Europe. Its utterly lovely in green and lilac, with stylised lilies across its facade, and an undulating roofline. The 1913 Grf Palace is another gem, but there are great examples practically everywhere in Szeged. dn Lechner took time off from Budapest to create the town hall, which doesnt appear to have a single right angle. It stands on Szechenyi Square, where you can hang out under the magnolia trees and listen to a nymph-adorned Art Nouveau fountain tinkle. I think the best in Szeged, though, is its New Synagogue, built in 1907. Its architect, Lipt Baumhorn, built a number of notable synagogues across Europe. This one isnt pure Art Nouveau it has some madcap Byzantine and Moorish whimsy but is an unexpected pleasure in Szegeds quiet backstreets. If youve never visited a synagogue, it will have you spellbound for its stained glass and rich decoration in timber and metal. The cupola is superb, patterned with gold stars and flowers set on an evening-blue background. Szeged had a Jewish population of some 8000 before World War II, now reduced to a few hundred. From Szeged, scoot across the border into Romania. The first town you come to is Timisoara, whose location has given it a progressive, Westernoriented outlook. Its nicknamed Little Vienna, admittedly rather a fanciful claim. But Vienna influenced its design of plentiful squares, parks and promenades and, of course, its architecture. Even its hydro-electric plant, fire station and former abattoir are lovely examples of Art Nouveau. Check out the Romanian National Bank, the Post Office and the Serbian Bishops Palace. But there are whole streets of Art Nouveau apartment blocks, such as Bulevardul 3 August 1919.
