Top college is high achiever KORMILDA COLLEGE has long been regarded as a lighthouse school, with graduate pass rates not only ranking among the best in the Territory but also the country and even the world. These remarkable results can be fully attributed to Kormildas quality, expert teaching staff dedicated professionals that are recruited to meet the high standards and expectations of the college. In return, Kormilda rewards its teaching staff with an extensive professional development program that ensures first-class professional teaching programs. Over the past three consecutive years, Kormilda has seen 12 of their senior students awarded Collegiate Scholarships into Queenslands Bond University. They have also claimed the Territorys top student in 2005, 2009, 2011 and 2012. Kormilda graduates have been welcomed into leading universities across the country some have even been awarded scholarships into universities abroad. Through the experience and quality of its teaching staff, Kormilda successfully imparts its philosophy of lifelong learning on to its students. This philosophy is to think outwardly with an inquirybased approach, which continues throughout their lives. There is also a very strong focus on leadership, which instils confidence, optimism and high self-esteem in students in order for them to become positive role models within their community. To further complement Kormildas academic curricular, they also recognise the importance of providing high levels of pastoral care in line with a holistic approach to their quality education. This equips each student with appropriate support as well as developing and nurturing their well being. Kormildas successful house system provides a sense of belonging for students through participation in various house events. And the schools professional teaching staff are rewarded through some outstanding student success as well as an enviable professional development program, complemented with a state-of-the-art campus. Tribute to our best teachers THOUSANDS of teachers will celebrate their day World Teachers Day in staffrooms and at functions across the Territory on Friday. Celebrated in more than 100 countries, World Teachers Day acknowledges the efforts of teachers in an increasingly complex, multicultural and technological society. It is a day students, parents and community members can demonstrate their appreciation for the contributions teachers have made to their community. Celebrations are being held at: Darwin, Palmerston and rural regions: Parliament House, Darwin; Alice Springs region: Chif ley Resort, Alice Springs; Katherine region: Kather ine Golf Club; Arnhem region: Arnhem Club, Nhulunbuy; and Barkly region: Battery Hill Mining Centre, Tennant Creek A highlight will be the pres entation of the Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards. These have been celebrated annually since 2005 and recognise innovation and excellence in Territory public education across six categories. They recognise government school teachers, leaders, support staff and principals who have made a significant contribution to quality learning. More than 240 nominations (almost 100 more than last year) were received this year from students, parents, colleagues and the community. Categories are: Northern Territory Early Childhood Teacher of the Year; Northern Territory Primary Teacher of the Year; Northern Territory Secondary Teacher of the Year; Northern Territory Principal of the Year; Northern Territory Award for Excellence in Teaching or Leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education; and Northern Territory Support Staff Member of the Year.
