SUNDAY AUGUST 24 2014 TRAVEL 39 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA ESCAPE.COM.AU SUNDAY AUGUST 24 2014 ESCAPE 29 V1 - ESCE01Z10MA in 1946 and designed by architect Colin St Clair Oakes, who also designed the Sai Wan War Cemetery in Hong Kong and the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery in Thailand. Walking towards the majestic white, stone stairs leading to the gently sloping tiered lawns, you could be forgiven for forgetting the land in which these servicemen are buried has a bloody history. Before the war, the land was a military camp, but on February 8, 1942, the invading Japanese army crossed the Johore Straits to the mouth of the Kranji River, about 3km from the cemetery. Just a day later, they launched an attack and over the next few days, in mostly handto-hand combat, the military camp was the scene of one of the biggest military losses in Australian wartime history. It was also the day my grandfather was killed. After taking control of Singapore, the Japanese established a prisoner of war camp at Kranji and over the Commonwealth forces. Rising from the top of the slope, looming over the graves and crosses, is a magnificent stone sculpture called the Singapore Memorial Wall. An enormous, rounded slab roof is supported by 12 walls on which the names of 24,000 casualties of the Commonwealth land and air forces are inscribed. These servicemen have no known graves, and no date of death, but were reported missing or captured in the Malaya and Indonesia campaigns. The wall also lists the names of those who died during the construction of the Burma railway, and those who were lost at sea while being transported to other POW camps. Directly behind the memorial wall is another curved structure on which is inscribed the names of about 800 Indian soldiers, whose remains were cremated in accordance with their beliefs. At the western end of the cemetery is the Singapore (unmaintainable graves) memorial, which commemorates more than 250 casualties, killed in the Malaya campaigns. And at the eastern end of the cemetery is the Singapore Civil Hospital Grave Memorial, a giant headstone that lists 400 civilians and servicemen who died at the hospital after their release from POW camps. Their remains are buried underneath the headstone in an emergency water tank that had been dug in the grounds of the hospital before the war. Although it doesnt take long to walk through the cemetery, its easy to spend hours there. There are no shops nearby, so its best to bring something to eat and drink, especially in the humidity of Singapore. The trains run frequently from Kranji Memorial MRT, so theres no need to rush and the stroll back to the station offers a chance for reflection before getting caught in the bustle of downtown Singapore again. next three years many prisoners were buried in its grounds. After the war, other fallen soldiers from prisoner of war camps across the island, including the notorious Changi, were also relocated to Kranji. Finding the exact location of buried soldiers is easy. In a small atrium at the top of the entry stairs, is a wall vault inside of which is a dog-eared book containing a list of the names of the soldiers laid to rest here, and the location of their crosses. I found my grandfathers name and plot E1, 12 and made my way reverentially towards it following the clearly laid out markers. I didnt expect to feel so overwhelmed when I stood in front of his grave. After all, I had never met him, but there was an undeniable connection. Later, as I wandered among the headstones, reading the two-line inscriptions many of the families of the fallen had provided, I was reminded there are large parts of Australias wartime history that get little recognition. The cemetery also contains 850 burials of unknown soldiers. A separate area, known as Plot 44, marks a collective grave for 69 Chinese servicemen, all members of The cemetery is at 9 Woodlands Rd, Singapore. Open daily from 7am-6pm. Free admission. No wheelchair access. GETTING THERE Nearest train station is Kranji MRT; follow the signs to the memorial.
