40 BACK TO SCHOOL FEATURE SUNDAY JULY 20 2014 NTNE01Z01MA - V1 Awards will honour teaching excellence DO you know a great teacher? Do your kids rave about their teacher after school? Why not nominate them for a Teaching in the Territory Excellence Award? The awards, celebrated annually since 2005, provide the opportunity to recognise principals, teachers and school support staff that have made a significant contribution to quality student learning in the Territory. Nominations for the awards open tomorrow and close on Friday, August 22, at 4pm. Last year more than 150 nominations were received from students, parents, col leagues and the community a testament to the quality of teaching and support staff in the Territory. Nominations for this years awards for government school teachers, principals or support staff members can be made in the following categories: Early Childhood Teacher of the Year Primary Teacher of the Year Secondary Teacher of the Year Principal of the Year Excellence in Teaching or Leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education, and Support Staff Member of the Year The winners will be announced at World Teachers Day functions held across the Territory on Friday, October 31. Celebrated in more than 100 countries, World Teachers Day, established in 1966 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), recognises the extraordinary contribution that teachers make to the community.
