Stuart, who left Parramatta to coach the Raiders after the sacking of David Furner, has wasted no time stamping his authority on his new team, training them in 40C heat and sending them to a week-long elite training camp. The former NSW and Australia coach has seen big potential for McCrone at hooker. Faith inMoses to deliver title MOSES Wigness has taken over the reins again at Brothers Rugby League club for the 2014 season. Wigness, who coached the club for three years and won the 2010 and 2011 premierships, replaces Anthoiny Castro who had held the position for the past two seasons. The clubs seniors sign-on day is at Airport Tavern today from 1pm. Brothers spokesman John Adams said the club wanted to regain the premiership that they lost to Palmerston last year. New rules to endmass debates MANLY coach Geoff Toovey says captain Jamie Lyon wont have to change his on-field approach to referees despite recent NRL rule changes. Lyon and Canterburys Michael Ennis are seen as two of the games leading debaters when it comes to arguing with match officials. But they are set to be stymied by a new law that limits where and when captains can speak to refs. Under new rules captains will only be able to speak to refs during a stoppage in play. Lachlan schooled by Shark RUGBY LEAGUE ByDOUGBOOTH MacKillop Sharks centre Levi Russell with student Lachlan Miller at the merger announcement yesterday Picture: JUSTIN SANSON LACHLAN Miller wants to play senior rugby league when he grows up. The MacKillop Catholic College student discovered plenty of ways to help him reach that goal from the now MacKillop Sharks hardtackling centre Levi Russell yesterday. Lachlan, 13, and Russell, 22, were integral parts of the launch to merge the Sharks with the Palmerstonbased college. I like rugby league because of the teamwork that is involved in playing, said Lachlan, who has been playing the game for four years. It is not just a one-man game. I like running with the ball and scoring tries. Russell said young players such as Lachlan were the future of the 13-a-side game. We are looking for a premiership this season and building links such as this is vital for the future, he said. College principal Loretta Graham said MacKillop was trying to build a community spirit through sporting organisations and this was another step forward. David Graham is the Year 8 music co-ordinator at MacKillop but his other passion is rugby league. Growing up in Cairns, he played his first rugby league in Queensland and last year he was with the Palmerston Raiders. However, as the brainchild behind the merger of the school and club, he has new allegiances. The Palmerston demographic is much different to Darwin, Graham said. Queensland and NSW influence the culture. Graham said the merger would help provide a grassroots pathway that had not existed before in rugby league in the Northern Territory. It is important that we try and bridge the gap between school and club, he said. The Sharks will hold their senior sign-on at Mary MacKillop School today from 10am. Read an exclusive interview with Darwins Joel Romelo in tomorrows SundayTerritorian. Right place right time for Ruffian The Ruffian (Kim Gladwin) after his fine win in the Buntine Handicap yesterday Picture: AARON BURTON HE was one of the main hopes in the Darwin Cup last year before the race was abandoned but, 12 months later, The Ruffian might just score a win in the Northern Territorys biggest race after all. The Sheila Arnold trained six-year-old, who won the NT Guineas and NT Derby in 2011 before finishing mid-field behind Hawks Bay in the Darwin Cup, produced a scintillating Darwin Cup trial when he smoked his six other rivals with success in the $46,000 Buntine Handicap (1900m). The Buntine and the Metric Mile, which is being run on July 26, are considered to be the two major lead-up races before the $200,000 Darwin Cup (2000m) run at Fannie Bay on August 4. After assuming the lead as the field turned out of the home straight, The Ruffian basically led his rivals a merry dance in a performance that mirrored his victory in the 2013 Alice Springs Cup (2000m). On that occasion, The Ruffian, with six-time Alice Springs Cup-winning jockey Dom Tourneur in the saddle, blitzed the field when he led from start to finish. If anything, The Ruffian was able to find another gear in the home straight at Pioneer Park last year as he extended his lead in the shadows of the post. That victory gave every indication that the Victorian gelding had the potential to win the 2013 Darwin Cup. Unfortunately, well never know what would have transpired a year ago and although a crack field assembled for the Cup there is no denying the fact that The Ruffian would have been a major player. After winning the Unibet WFA aboard Seal No More, Kim Gladwin piloted The Ruffian to victory and agreed that his win in the Buntine Handicap compared to his triumph in the Alice Springs Cup. Hes chalk and cheese and can be a difficult horse at times, but when hes in front and hes in the mood hes hard to catch, Gladwin said. I thought wed do it hard up the hill turning out of the straight, but to be perfectly honest he was cruising throughout. He does have bad attributes at times, but it was hard to fault his run today. Smarty Mac (Andrew Mallyon), who won the Chief Ministers Cup for trainer Dick Leech on Day 2 of the Carnival, finished strongly for second two-and-a-half lengths behind The Ruffian. The Bob Richard-trained Spartan Eagle (Jan Cameron), who had plenty of supporters going into last years Darwin Cup, might well be returning to his best after finishing the race in third place almost two lengths behind Smarty Mac. The Neil Dyer-trained Bel Sir (Jarrod Todd), from Kyneton in country Victoria backing up after taking out the Bridge Toyota Cup (1600m) on Wednesday just missed out on a minor placing after crossing the line in fourth place. Victory by The Ruffian, a six-year-old these days, once again continued the Alice Springs theme as Sheila Arnold, who is now based in Kyneton, was formerly of the Red Centre before moving to Victoria where she originally set up her new stable in Geelong.
