WEDNESDAY JULY 9 2014 SPORT 45 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA Inspired to a world title tilt JAYDE Freeman can thank her younger brother for her ticket to the World BMX Titles in the Netherlands later this month. Freeman, 15, has only been racing for just over a year but has found herself in the top 16 riders in the country to compete against the worlds best overseas. Her younger brother Ian Orr, 9, will also be joining his sister in the trip of a lifetime alongside fellow Territorians Ryan York-Morris, 14, and Mickayla Perkins, 11. The quartet have been preparing for the World Titles with several coaching sessions over the past fortnight with Australian BMX rider and 2012 Olympian Khalen Young. Freeman said watching her brother race around the Jingili MBX Centre at Marrara inspired her to give the sport a go. Ian used to always come out on Friday nights to race and it looked fun, she said. Mum and Dad werent too keen at the start, but they let me do it. She said the advice from Young was invaluable as the four Territory young guns prepare to tackle the big stage. It was pretty nerve-racking going to the Australian nationals, she said. It was good to have someone who is a professional come up here to teach us. Im just heading to the Worlds for the experience and not put too much pressure on myself. Using grants from the NT Government to assist their travel, the four riders will compete at the Rotterdam Ahoy Arena in The Netherlands from July 23-27. For the Territory to be represented at such a huge event by not one but four riders is a fantastic achievement, said Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing Matt Conlan. BMX is a growing sport it has a huge following in the Top End and is going from strength to strength.
