08 NEWS MONDAY JUNE 9 2014 NTNE01Z01MA - V1 Peoples power has green light A COMMUNITY owned solar power plant big enough to generate electricity for 10 to 20 houses could be operating by Christmas, part of a bigger vision to have community owned solar generating power for up to 200 homes in five years, the Environment Centre NT has said. The Centre, which hosted an environmental conference on Friday and Saturday, is the driver of the project. Centre director Dr Stuart Blanch said the idea was supported by community groups, business and academics and the chair, Tony Young, had suggested the Christmas time frame. If it works, then we will build a bigger one, Dr Blanch said. Our goal is to have a 1 megawatt of community owned solar power in five years time which would provide power for maybe up to 200 houses. Non-profit organisation Embarks community liaison officer Taryn Lane spoke at the conference about community ownership models overseas where there are government policies for mandatory community ownership of commercial power production. She said nationally there was a large push for community power generation projects, with 35 groups well advanced in solar, wind, hydro and bio mass. The group has overseen a $13.5 million wind turbine project outside Daylesford in Victoria for which about $10 million of the money for the two turbines came from both the local community and wider Victoria area. It supplies electricity for 2200 homes. Ms Lane said community power projects of all generation types generally ranged between 100 kilowatts and 10 megawatts. Ms Lane said a community solar project could be established for as little as $100,000.
