MONDAY JUNE 9 2014 WEATHER 39 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA Senator backs NZ-based factory trawlers use HOBART: Federal Government Fisheries spokesman Senator Richard Colbeck has slammed environmentalists for questioning the use of a factory trawler in Australian waters. Green groups say a Ukrainian ship more than 100m long, the New Zealand-based Meridian-1, could soon be fishing for blue grenadier off Tasmania. Senator Colbeck says the groups are mounting a fear campaign against Petuna Sealords use of the vessel. He says the company has fished the same region using similar ships for 17 years. Over that time they have used four different freezer vessels to fish for blue grenadier that is sold into the Australian market, Senator Colbeck said in a statement. The Meridian-1 has also been fishing in New Zealands MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified (blue grenadier) fishery for 20 years without incident. The Tasmanian senator said the fishery was well managed and quotas had been increased this year. The blue grenadier stock currently stands at 94 per cent of estimated unfished spawning biomass, he said. He said a large ship was necessary for safety in some of the worlds toughest marine conditions. Petuna has said using the ship could create 50 casual jobs in Tasmania. The same alliance of green groups, with recreational fishers, successfully fought the use of the 142m Dutch supertrawler Margiris in 2012. Freezer factory trawler Meridian-1 could be fishing in waters off Tasmania for blue grenadier within weeks Blue grenadier stock currently stands at 94 per cent Sunrise Sunset Moonrise Moonset 7:03 am 6:28 pm 3:09 pm 3:01 am Jun 13 Jun 20 Jun 27 Jul 5 Mon Jun 9 Tue Jun 10 Wed Jun 11 Thu Jun 12 Fri Jun 13 Sat Jun 14 Sun Jun 15 Mon Jun 16 2:55am 5.3m 8:46am 3.4m 2:35pm 5.4m 9:31pm 2.3m 4:03am 5.7m 9:57am 3.2m 3:36pm 5.7m 10:24pm 1.8m 4:56am 6.2m 10:52am 3.0m 4:25pm 6.0m 11:11pm 1.4m 5:44am 6.7m 11:39am 2.7m 5:09pm 6.3m 11:55pm 1.0m 6:30am 7.1m 12:21pm 2.4m 5:50pm 6.6m 12:38am 0.7m 7:13am 7.4m 1:02pm 2.2m 6:32pm 6.8m 1:20am 0.5m 7:54am 7.5m 1:43pm 2.1m 7:16pm 6.8m 2:02am 0.6m 8:34am 7.5m 2:28pm 2.0m 8:03pm 6.8m Darwin 22 31 Tindal 19 30 Jabiru 24 32 Nhulunbuy 22 29 9 Northeast Island 25 27 Borroloola 16 30 Tennant Creek 13 23 Alice Springs 1 19 Yulara 4 19 Location Min Max *Rain Location Min Max *Rain * rainfall 24 hours to 9am yesterday 1000 1024 1024 1032 1008 1016 1016 1011L 1007 L 1006 L 1009 L 1034 H 1034 H WARNINGS Warnings were current at 5pm yesterday.
