COMEBACK BID FOR BDR to Minister for Alcohol Policy Dave Tollner, a member of the Country Liberals team that scrapped the BDR after winning government in 2012. A spokesman from Mr Tollners office said the Government would only consider the Reference Groups plan once it was signed off and finalised and said the minister would not be weighing into the debate before this time. The whole process is to get local views considered, rather than having a Territory onesize-fits-all policy, he said. Its probably best to continue this process without our advice from afar. So far, no deadline has been set for the plan to be delivered. Shadow Minister for Alcohol Policy Michael Gunner said if Alice Springs reinstated the BDR, problem drinkers would head elsewhere. the current use of having police officers on duty outside bottle shops with the BDR licence scans at the store counter could be the best of both worlds. The alcohol problem is so big theres nothing wrong with combining everything that works, he said. The ten-member Reference Group, made up of regional industry heads including Mr Boffa, has been tasked with coming up with a plan to present to the Government that would offer strategies to help deal with the towns alcohol problems. A government appointed think-tank, the Alice Springs Regional Alcohol Reference Group, have reportedly been considering recommending bringing back the BDR a policy where shoppers drivers licences have to be scanned when buying alcohol. Head of the Peoples Alcohol Action Committee John Boffa has welcomed the renewed talk about reintroducing the BDR into Alice Springs, but said using it to replace current policies was not the answer. Mr Boffa said combining Matt Garrick The alcohol problem is so big theres nothing wrong with combining everything that works. Artist Dion Beasley is one of 103 people with profound disabilities who will participate in Barkly's NDIS trial Picture: BARKLY REGIONAL ARTS Artist gains NDIS trial DVD role A PROMINENT Tennant Creek artist has been selected to feature in an educational DVD that will explain the NDIS trial to participants across Barkly. Dion Beasley is one of the 103 people with significant disabilities who will take part in the trial starting July 1. Dion has muscular dystrophy, meaning the muscles he needs to hold and move a pencil are deteriorating. He is also profoundly deaf as a result of a childhood meningococcal infection. Given a lack of services for people who use sign language in Tennant Creek, Dions carer Joie Boulter said it was a welcome opportunity to seek services outside the Territory. Dion is embarking on an arty future so he needs to be part of the general community, she said.
