Every October, literary fans flock to Ubud, an hour out of Kuta, to attend the Writers and Readers Festival. Heading off overseas to attend a literary festival seemed a novel idea at first but the reality was days of pleasure in prose and a bag full of books to lug home. This year, about 25,000 people attended the five-day literary feast, filling the streets of Ubud with bookworms keen to get their fix. With 200 writers, artists and musicians from all over the world running more than 200 sessions all day and well into the night, my relaxing holiday sometimes became stressful as I had to choose between so many great events. Among the celebrity scribes were UK writer Sebastian Faulks (Birdsong), US novelist Lionel Shriver (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Lonely Planet founder Tony Wheeler, two program covered everything. One of the highlights was hearing Mexican journalist Lydia Cacho tell how exposing politicians involved in an international child sextrafficking network saw her tortured and imprisoned. A session on memoirs author, Bahasa language lessons, cooking classes and night-time street parties. There were also childrens, film and arts events, and, of course, quite a few book launches going on. With so many writers around, it would be difficult not introduced me to the humour of Indonesian author Agustinus Wibowo, whose books I eagerly await translation into English. As well as panels and author talks, there was a long list of events with a few surprise offerings, including a cycling tour around Ubud with an time Miles Franklin winner Kim Scott (The Deadman Dance), Aussie author Richard Flanagan (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) and human rights barrister Julian Burnside. From sex to superheroes, happiness to human rights, and bestsellers to breasts, the main A novel way to get the full story The Writers and Readers Festival offers travellers a chance to explore beautiful Ubud while broadening their literary horizons, writes Kylie Stevenson GETTING THERE Air Asia, Jetstar and Garuda Indonesia fly daily from capital cities to Balis Denpasar Airport. From here, Ubud is about a one-hour drive. Many hotels offer an airport transfer. WHERE TO STAY The UWRF recommends a range of accommodation, from luxury to budget, on their website. There were also childrens, film and arts events, and, of course, quite a few book launches going on. With so many writers around, it would be difficult not to become inspired to put pen to paper yourself, so the program also featured many workshops. Authors were on hand to take budding writers through topics such as poetry, storytelling, fiction, travel and how to get published. The festival uses 50 venues around Ubud, which allowed visitors to explore the town. Set amid a panorama of rice paddies, Ubud is filled with excellent eateries, cheap day spas, yoga studios, boutique clothing and craft shops, and many bookstores. It is also home to a bustling market, so you can bag some bargains: after all, no trip to Bali is complete without buying a few wood carvings and sarongs. If you can manage to take a break from the books, theres much to see and do around Ubud. With such a packed program, Id recommend some days to spare before or after the festival to ensure you make the most of this special part of Bali. We had just one day before the book bonanza kicked off, so we headed for the hills on a bike tour with Bali Eco Cycling. We were picked up early in the morning and driven to Penelokan for a buffet breakfast (including chocolate pancakes) overlooking one of Indonesias several active volcanoes, Mt Batur. From here we headed to a coffee plantation, where we were introduced to luwak coffee made from beans that have been eaten and excreted by a civet. It is considered one of the worlds best coffees due to the animals pickiness when it comes to the beans they will eat, and the digestion that is said to enhance the flavour. And then our small group was on our bikes, cruising through villages amid rice paddies and farms. We had the opportunity to witness traditional Bali, with farmers knee-deep in muddy water ploughing, and women harvesting rice by hand. We also ventured inside a familys compound to learn a little about their way of life. All the way children called out, eager for a greeting. The tour concluded with a feast and an optional tour to the nearby monkey forest. There are many bicycle tours available, and ours was mostly downhill, but there are more difficult routes for the fit. The same company also runs treks, including climbing Mt Batur, a jungle trek or a rice paddy walk. Whether at the festival, on bikes or venturing up a volcano, no matter how you spend your day in beautiful Ubud, you can always finish it off kicking back with a Bintang and a good book. The writer travelled independently. The Ubud Writers and Readers Festival began as a healing project in 2003 in response to the first Bali bombings. Founder and director Janet DeNeefe, who owns local restaurant Casa Luna, says their mission is to create a world-class literary event that encourages a free and unfettered dialogue, that transcends race, creed and gender to celebrate the universal appeal of story and open a window to the treasury of words and ideas. In addition to a literary feast, it also offers a chance to showcase the Ubud region. THE FESTIVAL CHAPTER AND VERSE: (clockwise from main) Ubuds Writers and Readers Festival boasts street performers, market tours, seminars and plenty of events for children.
