The NT Newscan reveal the AFLNT is committing an unprecedented level of resources and money to ensure the 100year milestone of one of Australias most iconic Australian football competitions exceeds all expectations. The 100-year milestone of the NTFL will involve all levels of government from federal, state and local to the AFL, AFLNT and NT Tourism and money will be no barrier. Among the highlights are the return of representative football when either Collingwood or Essendon play the Territorys best in February 2016, the announcement of an NTFL team and player of the century and $22,000 in prizemoney for the 2016 premiership side. The players will each receive a replica of the 100-year premiership trophy and AFLNT officials are planning a live national telecast of the grand final. We want to ensure the centenary year and the centenary grand final receives the same major event status the Darwin Cup and V8 Supercars enjoy, AFLNT manager of operations Stephen Nugent said in a confidential planning document. The NTFL Grand Final is now a huge drawcard for interstate visitors, but still retains its uniquely Territorian feel and deserves a special place on the calendar of NT special events. A live telecast of a centenary gala dinner involving 600 guests at Darwins Convention Centre will include the 2016 Hall Of Fame induction, announcements of the team and player of the century and the first elevation of a previous inductee to iconic status. Other highlights include all living players and family members of the deceased of the NTFL Team of the Century in a motorcade before the grand final, the players wearing heritage guernseys and the umpires traditional white. And the Chaney Medal, which is awarded to the best player on the ground in the grand final, will be presented by the NTFL player of the century or a family member if he is deceased. The Nichols Medal, awarded to the best player in the 2015-16 season, will have a major focus on past winners and their contribution to Territory football.
