The bloodshed follows the start of the Islamic new year just days earlier and as Shiite Muslims converge on the shrine city of Karbala, south of Baghdad, for commemoration ceremonies. It is a period when Sunni militants often try to target Shiites and the security forces. It is the latest in Iraqs worst violence since 2008, with more than 5500 people dead this year despite tightened security measures and a swathe of operations against militants. Man too fat to fly: airline CHICAGO: A French family who came to the US for medical treatment say they are stranded in Chicago after British Airways determined their son was too fat to fly. Kevin Chenais, 22, spent a year and a half at the Mayo Clinic for treatment of a hormone disorder that led him to weigh 227kg. His mother was near tears as she described the familys problems to the local CBS affiliate. We blame British Airways because now they just leave us and they brought us here, Christina Chenais told the station. If they could bring him here with that problem in economy, there was a way to take him back by economy, but just get him back home for his medical treatments to continue. The family spent a week in an airport hotel trying to resolve the matter and, running out of money, has decided their only option is to take a train to New York and get back to France on the Queen Mary cruise ship. Kevin Chenais requires round-the-clock oxygen and medical attention. Im sure a lot of big people like me or bigger cannot travel because they have the same problem, he told the station. This time before leaving I knew something would go wrong. A British Airways spokesman told CBS that its customer service team worked diligently to find a solution. Unfortunately, it is not possible to safely accommodate the customer on any of our aircraft, the spokesman said in a statement. The Chenais family did not immediately return a request for comment. Ill drink to that! Joe Morette watches as his flock of turkeys drink beer from the trough in Henniker, New Hampshire. Mr Morette says that birds are just like humans and get beer bellies and insists it makes them fatter, tastier and more juicy Picture: AP PHOTO/JIM COLE Fords fresh embarrassment OTTAWA: Torontos cracksmoking mayor is facing new embarrassment after video footage was published showing him in an agitated state, staggering and making foul-mouthed threats. Rob Ford, who admitted earlier this week that he had smoked crack cocaine while on a drunken binge, said he had been extremely, extremely inebriated when the video was shot. Its extremely embarrassing and I dont know what to say, Mr Ford told reporters on Thursday. Alarm as meth boom hits Asia BANGKOK: The United Nations has sounded the alarm over record seizures of methamphetamine across much of Asia as the illegal drug floods streets and clubs. Last year, 227 million methamphetamine pills were seized in East and Southeast Asia, up 59 per cent on the previous year and a seven-fold rise on 2008 figures, the United Nations said yesterday. UScounts cost of shutdown WASHINGTON: The 16-day US Government shutdown cost 6.6 million in lost work days for federal workers, amounting to $A2.12 billion in lost productivity, the White House says. The shutdown impact ranged from delays in approving home loans and missed food safety inspections to a delayed fishing season in the Alaskan crab grounds. The report was published yesterday as the White House steps up warnings that fourth quarter economic growth will be hard hit by the shutdown.
