While analysis nationally is focused on seasonally adjusted data, the ABS only publishes original and trend data for the Territory. In trend terms, there were 125 302 people employed in the Territory in March 2012, a 0.2 per cent increase from February 2012. Nationally, the number of people employed rose by 0.1 per cent to 11.5 million over the same period. In March 2012, the Territorys trend labour force participation rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 75.2 per cent, the highest among all the jurisdictions. In the year to March 2012, in original terms, employment in the Territory decreased by 0.1 per cent, while nationally employment increased by 1.0 per cent (see chart). Unemployment Rate In trend terms, the Territorys unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage point to 4.0 per cent in March 2012. This is the second lowest unemployment rate among all of the jurisdictions equal to WA and behind ACT (3.6 per cent). Nationally, the trend unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.2 per cent in March 2012 (see chart). Comparing March 2012 with March 2011, the Territorys unemployment rate has increased by 1.1 percentage points, however, as can be seen in the chart, this rate is highly volatile. The unemployment rate in other jurisdictions varied between 3.6 per cent in the Australian Capital Territory to 7.2 per cent in Tasmania. ANZ Job Advertisements The ANZ Bank reports that compared to the previous month, the number of seasonally adjusted newspaper job advertisements in the Territory increased by 5.0 per cent to 377 per week in March 2012. Nationally, newspaper job advertisements decreased by 0.6 per cent to 7314 per week over the same period. Compared to March 2011, newspaper job ads in the Territory increased by 8.8 per cent in March 2012. All other jurisdictions recorded declining job advertisements, ranging from 34.3 per cent in the Australian Capital Territory to 12.2 per cent in Western Australia. Nationally, newspaper job ads declined by 22.0 per cent over the same period. In the year to March 2012, job advertisements in the Territory increased by 5.1 per cent, this is the second year on year increase since March 2011.
