Set for action at the Valley SPEEDWAY BEN Bad Boy Atkinson had some ominous words for his 410 sprintcar rivals in the Chariots of Thunder series at Hidden Valley tonight. The four-race series concludes tomorrow night with a 30-lap feature race at Northline Speedway. Atkinson finished fifth and second in feature races on the first two nights and is desperate to move to the top step of the podium by dominating week two. Well definitely be trying to do that, Atkinson said. We had a couple of problems with the car last week that have been sorted this time around so were definitely right to go. Atkinson knows he will get some tight racing from Queenslander Cameron Gessner and Top End rival Jamie ONeil. Those two were at the pointy end last week and will take some beating, so we want the car just right, he said. The 14-car field can expect a slick and dusty racetrack at the business end of the Toms Mufflers-Advanced Air series. Hewitt beat American Brian Baker 6-3 4-6 6-3 6-4 in his opener yesterday (NT time) to set up a secondround showdown with fellow former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro. Del Potro is the only man other than the big four of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to win a Grand Slam crown in the past eight years. Despite being ranked 60 places below the Argentine sixth seed, 32-year-old Hewitt said he liked his chances of springing a boilover. Another step up. But thats why Im here, to have a crack at the best guys, said Hewitt, the 2001 champion. You have the opportunity to play the best guys out here at slams and at slams this year he is one of them. Its going to be a big test and Im looking forward to it. This is why I still play in the game, to be in events like this Davis Cup and Grand Slams. Del Potro, the 2009 champion, needed more than four hours and four match points to oust Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 7-6 (9-7) in his firstround match. Although Hewitt has lost both his previous hardcourt encounters with del Potro, the former world No. 1 has beaten him twice on grass and is backing his speed and agility to combat the tall South Americans power game. I feel I can hurt him in some areas some other guys cant, Hewitt said. But the guy has such brute power out there. He can blow anyone off the court. And for his size, he moves pretty well. In their most recent meeting, at the Queens Club two months ago, Del Potro beat Hewitt 6-2 2-6 6-2 in what the Australian called three exceptional sets. Del Potro is wary, declaring Hewitt maybe the toughest opponent without a seeding in the field. Hes going to be really difficult for me, del Potro said.
