Evans has not raced since last months Tour de France, where his form deserted him and he finished 39th. It was his worst finish at the race and came at the end of a tough 12 months for the 2011 Tour champion. The 2009 world road race champion is in the Australian mens squad for the world titles and the Florence course suits his cycling strengths very well. He will start his worlds build-up from September 3 at the Tour of Alberta. I was very fatigued after this years Tour de France, so I took some time to rest at home with my family, he said in a team statement. Now Im back into a serious phase of training. From where I was at the end of July, I have made a lot of progress. Abbotts $6m goal for Cup NETBALL NETBALL Australia has welcomed a federal Coalition pledge of $6 million towards the legacy of the 2015 Netball World Cup in Sydney and completion of Netball NSWs centre of excellence, if elected. The commitment, announced by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott yesterday, would provide $3 million to Netball Australia to assist in preparation, delivery and participation legacy for the World Cup and $3 million to complete the state-of-the-art Netball Central complex at Sydney Olympic Park. Netball Australia CEO Kate Palmer said the funding would ensure the continuing sustainability and growth of netball and ensure a post-event legacy for Australias No. 1 female team participation sport. We welcome the coalitions commitment to the future of Australian netball, said Palmer in a statement. Top-shelf performers back in action at Winnellie Park GREYHOUNDS SWANSEA Jacky brings the star power back to Winnellie Park tonight. Darwins greyhound queen returns from a rare week off to contest the feature TattsBet Sprint (537m) a race boasting a first-prize cheque of $1000. Swansea Jacky will start a short-priced favourite on the back of her outstanding record at the trip featuring six wins and two minor placings from eight starts, including that third-place finish in the Group 3 Darwin Cup in August. The Graeme Ferns-trained star jumps from box four in tonights race against a solid field of rivals including last-start victor Miss Mwamba and Benny Mite, who does boast a best time of 31.60 seconds at this trip. Swansea Jacky is not the only top-shelf performer on tonights six-race card with Just Proper also back from a brief hiatus. The 27-time race winner has lived in Swansea Jackys shadow during his past two outings, but drops back in grade to the Holco Meats Dash (312m). Exciting Warren Twaddle speedster Kortemall chases back-to-back wins in the Holdfast Insurance Brokers Dash (383m), while All Jordan looks ideally placed to land a breakthrough success in the Spray Lawn Maiden Dash (312m). Racing starts from the usual time of 7.39pm. Coverage of the meeting can be found through Radio TAB. GREGORMACTAGGART Marks Jewel fits job ahead Trainer Mark Kavanagh with his star charge Atlantic Jewel yesterday Picture: ROB LEESON HORSERACING ByMICHAELMANLEY ATLANTIC Jewels unbeaten record is secondary to how she pulls up after the race in terms of importance to her trainer Mark Kavanagh. Atlantic Jewel tomorrow makes her long-awaited comeback at Caulfield in the Memsie Stakes after being sidelined for 18 months after winning the All Aged Stakes at Randwick in April 2012. Atlantic Jewel has had seven starts for seven wins, and while Kavanagh would be happy for it to be eight for eight, its not the be all and end all for him. In terms of her unbeaten record, Ive never lost sight of the bigger picture for her, which is in October, he said referring to the Cox Plate. Shes no Black Caviar sprinter type of horse, so shes not screwed down for her return. Remember shes a 2000m horse. He said Atlantic Jewel wouldnt be coming back to the races unless he thought she still had a lot to offer. Theres nothing worse than a champion ending up tent boxing, Kavanagh said. He believes he has Atlantic Jewel exactly where he wanted her to be in terms of fitness. What do I expect? I expect her to run well and then pull up sound and good after the race, he said. If I wasnt happy with her I wouldnt be bringing her to the races, but I train my horses so they improve into their campaigns. Going into the race I dont think I could have done any more. The timing is right for her to return to the races. Im satisfied Ive done everything right but shes not 100 per cent fit. Kavanagh waxed lyrical about Atlantic Jewel, saying she was a special horse and there was no horse like her. Kavanagh said he would have preferred the Memsie Stakes to be held at an earlier time, but he had sent a stable representative to look at the track and he was satisfied with its condition. Atlantic Jewel held her spot at the top of the markets yesterday but drifted from $1.90 to $1.95 with TAB and was $2.10 with TattsBet. Kavanagh said stablemate Super Cool, also resuming in the Memsie Stakes, was behind Atlantic Jewel in fitness. Expect to see a fat and hairy horse in the mounting yard with a lot of improvement to come. Hell need another run or two, he said.
