CSIRO officials admitted that they found about 200 dead crows on the highway between Noonamah and Palmerston, where there was concern that they may have died fromavian flu. The Territory government approved and the CSIRO contracted a bird pathologist to examine the crows and he confirmed the problem was not avian flu. However he found that 98 per cent of the crows were killed by impactwith trucks, and only 2 per cent were killed by car impact. The government then hired an ornithological behaviorist to determine the disproportionate percentages for trucks versus car kills. After 18 months and $2.7million spent, the ornithological behaviourist determined the cause. When crows eat road kill, they set up a look-out crow towarn of impending danger. His conclusionwas the lookout crow could say cah but not truck. Tax moneywell spent!
