Three-coursemeal, music, dancing and entertainment. Tickets $195. By DAMIEN McCARTNEY A POPULAR secondary school is celebrating 50 years of education. Darwin High School opened in 1963. Judy Beard was one of the original school prefects and house captains from 1963. She said she learned skills that helped her walk straight into a job out of school. I did commercial subjects I did shorthand, typing and bookkeeping, plus English and biology, Ms Beard said. We only came in the last term of 1963, but it was all brand new. Daniel Hamilton is a modern day equivalent of a prefect as a Year 12 student leader. Theres great support from everyone, great classes they offer a wide range of classes, Daniel said. I have friends that live down south and theyre blown away by how many subjects the school offers and how many languages they have. I think the schools diversity is a really great strength and the quality of teaching that they offer is unparalleled. Principal Trevor Reid said the school represented an accurate cross-section of Darwin. It is an extremely friendly school and I think the way that the staff and students work together and support one another is really positive, considering we have 1200 students here on the campus, Mr Reid said. We havent lost sight of our past, the current cohort know all about 1963 and theyve been focusing on it, the history, the photographic display. I think thats a big strength here.
