South Australian Hayden Bentley shot his 3500cc Racer Cadillac past the big names on the road to Finke to grab a 2 min 6 sec lead at the halfway stage of the 452km race. Bentleys time of 1 hr 49 min and 48 sec was almost seven seconds quicker than 2012 winner Brad Gallards trip to Finke and a full 12 minutes faster than any of the bikes. If he can stay in front until the finish line in Alice Springs about 9.30am today, it will be the first win by a single-seater since Warrnam bools Paul Simpson did it in 1997. Defending champion Gallard failed to make the start line yesterday when mechanical gremlins encountered during Saturdays prologue scuttled his attempt to join David Fellows, Mark Burrows and Shannon Rentsch as back-to-back winners. Five-time winner Fellows joined a long list of casualties when his Jimco Nissan Buggy broke down 20km north of the finish line. West Australian Beau Robinson, third in the race last year, is poised to grab the 2013 crown if Bentley falters after finishing 2 min 6 sec behind Bentley. Of the Territory contingent, Alice Springs Paul Gil bert and his navigator, Michael Zadka, have their Jimco Chev in seventh position overall after a 1:59:02 run from the Alice. Andrew Marks and Matt Ryan are 10th in their Razorback Nissan and the husband-and-wife team of Jason and Jane Adami are 11th after a trouble-free run in their Porter Chev. Howard Springs Glenn Lantze is 51st overall and fifth in his class after a smart run to Finke in his 900cc Polaris machine. Mechanical problems dogged Sandgroper Travis Robinson and Centralian Andrew Kittle had an encounter with livestock that left his Jimco Toyota somewhat worse for wear.
