5 Economy Overview Population The Territory has the smallest population and lowest population density of all jurisdictions in Australia. More than 30percent of the Territorys population is Indigenous, compared to 2.5percent nationally. The Territorys estimated resident population increased by 1.6percent through the year to June2010 to 229711. Natural increase (births minus deaths) is the largest component of population growth in the Territory. However, net interstate migration tends to drive changes in growth. The Territorys annual population growth is estimated to have moderated to 1.0percent in 2010, reflecting moderating economic and employment growth, lower net overseas migration and the relocation of the 1stBrigades 7th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment to South Australia from the December quarter. Population growth is expected to remain stable at 1.0percent in 2011, rising to 1.8percent in 2012 due to increased residential construction activity, recovering household consumption and the build up of the 1stBrigades 5thBattalion Royal Australian Regiment. e: estimate; f: forecast Note: The ABS changed the net overseas migration estimation methodology in 2007, representing a break in the series. As such, long-term trends need to be interpreted with caution. Source: NT Treasury, ABS Cat.
