Fiscal and Economic Outlook 42 _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Department of the Legislative Assembly The Department of the Legislative Assembly provides administrative support to Members of Parliament and parliamentary committees and is responsible for the management of Parliament House. From 2003-04, additional ongoing funding of $0.145 million has been provided to establish an Environment and Sustainable Development Committee and to expand the activities of the Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs. Department of Employment, Education and Training The Government continues to place priority on education and training and has approved the following new initiatives. A further $2.5 million is included in the 2003-04 Budget to meet programs commenced in 2001-02 such as the recruitment of 100 additional teachers over four years, the introduction of a student teachers bursary scheme, the development of an alternative education provision scheme and the recruitment of school attendance officers. $3 million additional ongoing funding to improve information technology infrastructure in schools. Increased funding for the Charles Darwin University of $1.5 million to assist with the establishment of an Institute of Advanced Studies. $1.5 million additional ongoing for training programs for apprentices. $6.3 million for improved teachers pay and conditions as part of the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement. An additional $0.5 million to increase the capacity of the Office of Work Health to improve occupational health and safety throughout the Territory. $0.46 million to support students with learning difficulties. $5 million for stage 1 of the Desert Peoples Centre (capital grant). The following major projects have been included on the Departments 2003-04 Capital Works Program: $M Parap Primary School, stage 2, relocation of preschool to the primary school grounds, construction of new classrooms and upgrade of existing primary school facilities including classrooms, assembly area, canteen, stage areas and landscaping 3.98 Darwin High School, stage 1a to commence the redevelopment/upgrade of the school, with final scope of works subject to the outcome of the Secondary Education Review due in early 2003-04 1.00 Kalkaringi, construct new secondary school facility as part of the remote schools upgrade program 1.00 Minyerri, construct new secondary school facility as part of the remote schools upgrade program 1.00 Palmerston, secondary education facilities 10.00 Maningrida, stage 2, improvements to be made to school facilities as part of the remote schools upgrade program 1.00
