Fiscal and Economic Outlook 52 _______________________________________________________________________________________________ The Government has decided to bring forward the cessation of the levy to 1 July 2003. The early cessation will reduce levy collections by an estimated $8.4 million in 2003-04. This measure will benefit the owners of over 90 000 vehicles that are currently subject to the levy. As shown in figures 5.1 and 5.2, after removing the levy, the Territorys motor vehicle registration fees will revert to being among the lowest in Australia. FIGURE 5.1: COMPARISON OF MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION FEES FOR AN AVERAGE 4-CYLINDER CAR Source: Northern Territory Treasury Note: This data is for vehicle registrations only and does not include third party vehicle insurance payments. Rather than being a Government imposed tax or registration fee, third party insurance reflects the cost and risk of claims associated with the use of a motor vehicle.
