The Autism NT office is staffed by executive officer Merryn Affleck who is the parent of three children with her eldest child, Sam, being diagnosed with autism. She attended the ANU in Canberra and majored in psychology. She then earned her Grad Dip Ed from the Canberra College of Advanced Education with the intention of becoming a teacher of children with autism. Merryn then moved to the US in 1985 until July, 2012, when she finally moved back home to Australia and to Autism NT in Darwin. Autism NT will be holding a series of fundraising and awareness-raising activities throughout the Northern Territory this month. Included in these activities are: Light it up Blue Today, April 2, where anyone can show their support for autism and autism awareness by either lighting up a blue light, wearing a blue shirt, dying your hair blue. Autism NT is encouraging all people lighting it up blue to take a photo and send in their images to Autism NT to be uploaded to their facebook page. ASD Expo On Friday and Saturday, an Autism Expo will be held for parents at the Mirrabeena Resort in Darwin. The expo is an opportunity for families to come together and gain knowledge and skills that will assist their child to grow and develop. It is funded by the Autism Adviser Program Autism SA/NT. Autism NT @ the Movies On April 11, Autism NT will present Oblivion at the CMAX Cinemas in Palmerston. Tickets are $25 each and can still be bought by contacting Autism NT. Walk for Autism On April 20 an autism community awareness walk will be happening along the Nightcliff Foreshore area. The walk starts at 9am at the Aralia St carpark and costs $5 to participate. There is a combination of a long walk (5km) and a shorter walk. Autism NT is a not-for-profit organisation. Their shop front is located at Shop 22, Nightcliff Shopping Centre. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 9am to 2.30pm. Appointments are available outside normal office hours.
