Ryan and Catherine were among hundreds of primary and secondary school students to descend on Darwin, taking the sport of rockclimbing by storm. The inter-schools rockclimbing competition is being held at Doctors Gully where youngsters are impressing those around them. Schools from all around the NT have come, from Gove, Alice Springs, and even Singapore, Darwin Rock Centre general man ager, Gemma Reynolds, said. Weve had a student climb to the top of a 10m wall in 4.96 seconds, which is nice and quick, and weve got some technique climbs. Ive been definitely impressed by the kids so far. The competition runs for two weeks. Mighty Sweet and Sour too strong for Brothers TABLE TENNIS By IANBUTTERWORTH SWEET and Sour moved two games clear at the top of the ladder after defeating Brothers six rubbers to five in Cazalys A-Grade Table Tennis. Toong Yeen Lee was heroic for Brothers, winning all three singles to give his side every possible chance, but in the decisive rubber, Robert Ho (Sweeties), defeated Thong Mann Lee in four sets to clinch victory. Roadies took a giant step towards securing a finals spot by defeating fifth-placed Palmerston Golf Club. John Pudney won the crucial battle against PGC star Anhtai Lee 12-10 in the fifth, and then combined with Dennis Evans and Roland Chin to win both doubles rubbers, which enabled Roadies to squeeze out a 6-5 win. Doubles also proved crucial in the other match after Rhiannon Alexander got Hot and Sweaty off to the best possible start by beating Champions star Siew Chieng 13-11 in the fifth set, enabling her side to take the singles rubbers 5-4 on the night. Champions dug deep and were able to win both doubles rubbers by two sets to one, to just see off the challenge from the bottom side. Toong Yeen Lee (Brothers) maintained his three game lead over John Pudney (Roadies) in the individual standings. In Cazalys B-Grade competition, Royal Marines remain unbeaten after overcoming a scare from Grey Ghosts. With the match tied at five rubbers each, Viqar Ali Khan defeated Andrew Barton to clinch the match. Second-placed Bluetongues also had a scare from bottom side Sand Witches, but the steady Thong Sum Lee defeated Stewart Cobb in the final rubber to take the match for Bluetongues. Tangerine Dreams won their fourth straight match beating third-placed Navy Seals, but dropped out of the top four on percentage when Redbacks crushed a depleted Blackbeards side by eight rubbers to three. Viqar Ali Khan is unde feated and leads the individual standings by one from Robert Ho (Redbacks) with Chris Depasquale (Bluetongues) one further back. Results, Rd8. A-Grade: Roadies 6 d Palmer ston Golf Club 5; Champions 6 d Hot and Sweaty 5; Sweet and Sour 6 d Brothers 5. B-Grade: Royal Marines 6 d Grey Ghosts 5; Redbacks 8 d Blackbeards 3; Tangerine Dreams 6 d Navy Seals 5; Bluetongues 6 d SandWitches 5. Sizzling start to season MOTORSPORT By IANBUTTERWORTH Riders run hot as championship embraces class capacity racing ROUND one of the 2013 Top End Road Racing Association (TERRA) season kicked off at Hidden Valley with some exciting racing, including personal best lap times in all classes. The TERRA 2013 Club Championship comprises nine rounds, weather permit ting, and each round is made up of three 10-lap races held at the Hidden Valley Motorsport Raceway. A major change for 2013 is the move to class capacity racing much like most Australian clubs. And TERRA will also be racing three classes: Superbikes (1000cc) A and B Grade; SuperSports (600cc) A and B Grade, and for the first time, ClubMan as a single grade. A-Grade 1000s saw a headto-head battle with reigning champ Che Diggens and Chris McMillan. And while McMillan started strongly taking heat one and setting a personal best lap time of 1min 13sec, Diggens took heats two and three with McMillan pushing him all the way. Stan Whiting was a consistent and lonely third and Greg Chin also set a personal best of 1:14 taking fourth. Cam Bowman had a great day on debut, pushing some of the A-Graders, and now sits on top of the B-Grade Superbikes standings. A-Grade 600s set off fast with Mick Kelly taking the lead but he had to retire from race one with fuel issues. Chips Parry set some blistering times taking race one and finishing second behind Kelly in races two and three. Dave Lovett rode smoothly for third ll after some tough battles with Sam Slessar. Traff Whalan and Joe Ryke had a coming together into turn one, sitting them both out of the first race. Whalan bounced back to win races two and three of the B-Grade mob, but it was Warwick Prices consistency that now sees him on top of B-Grade 600s. The new ClubMan class was a great success with race wins to Dylan Walton and Harry Perkins, while Anthony Castro hung on for third place overall. Round two is set for Sunday, April 14.
