Description

Targeted searches for butterflies/diurnal moths and land/freshwater snails at Fish River Station, NT, were conducted over a 10-day period in the late wet season-early dry season 2012. Survey effort for both invertebrate groups comprised about 70 hrs each. For the butterflies/diurnal moths, a total of 277 records were obtained representing 74 species (71 butterflies, 3 diurnal moths). Among these, 23 taxa (2 species, 21 subspecies) are endemic to the Top End and/or north-western Australia. The most noteworthy record was an extant breeding population of Libythea geoffroy genia, a rare and poorly known species which was previously known only from two historic records in the NT. For the land/freshwater snails, a total of 82 records were obtained representing 21 species (18 land snails, 3 freshwater snails), of which at least four are scientifically undescribed. The most significant discoveries were the collections of Glyptopupoides egregia, which represents the first record for the NT, and Torresitrachia sp. 48 Fish River, an undescribed species endemic to Fish River Station. Attention is drawn to the conservation management, particularly the exclusion of fire, of limestone outcrops supporting patches of monsoon vine thicket. This ecological community supports critical breeding habitats of Libythea geoffroy and a number of specialised land snails (Genus 4 sp. 28 Daly River, Torresitrachia spp., Glyptopupoides egregia, Gyliotrachela australis).,
