NEWS Aussie, Aussie, Aussie The 79 new Australians with Mayor Damien Ryan who was the presiding officer at their citizenship ceremony William, Chiara, Rahma and Chris Targett Steve Menzies Rodolfo and Jodei Aplaon became Australian citizens on Saturday New Aussie Pryce Estrada with his mum, Rosette Centralian 26ers Kriss Borgas, Noma Khumalo,11, and Robyn Lambley cut the birthday cake after the citizenship ceremony Andrew OKeefe and Sam Armytage began the telecast of Weekend Sunrise from 5.30am Pictures: AMY WEST, CHLOE GERAGHTY and ANNE FUSSELL THE delight and pride of the 79 new Aussies, from 22 different countries, shone through the Alice Springs Citizenship Ceremony on Australia Day. From young children barely able to walk to the more mature, they enthusiastically declared Australia their home, loudly supported by family and friends. Kenya-born Hellen Webster almost didnt make it after baby Harry arrived only a few days before the ceremony. But Hellen, who moved to Alice Springs five years ago, was allowed to leave the hospital on Friday night and headed for the ceremony the next day. The event was the highlight of a fun-filled day that started early with the traditional 3km fun-run and saw Alice Springs beamed live to the rest of the country after the Channel 7 Sunrise team set up an al fresco studio under the trees. In the build-up to the citizenship ceremony, presided over by Mayor Damien Ryan, the new Aussies were entertained by the Town Band before Norforce marched into the courtyard to provide the guard of honour for the flag-raising. Lingiari MHR Warren Snowdon read a message from Immigration Minister Chris Bowen then the audience was entertained by We R 1 singing I Am Australian. After a short break the ceremony resumed with the new Australians reciting their oaths and affirmations. For many, becoming a citizen has been a long journey. An Italian holiday romance planted the idea for Dr Rahman Targett. Born in the Philippines, Dr Targett studied medicine and gained her degree in Pakistan where her father was a diplomat. On holiday from working with the United Nations, she met future husband Chris, who is Australian-born, in Rome. He followed me to Sudan and we were married there, she said. After the birth of our two children, William and Chiara, he nagged me to come to Australia. The family moved to Alice Springs in 2010 with Dr Targett working with Congress and Mr Targett at the hospital. A presentation of Australia Day Medals to the winners of the Australia Day Family Fun Run/ Walk (see sport section for details) was followed by a short speech by 2012 Centralian Citi zen of the Year Bev Ellis before the presentation of awards. Three Centralians who share January 26 as their birthday Robyn Lambley, Kriss Borgas and Noma Khumalo cut an Australia-shaped birthday cake. With the formalities over, there was a free traditional barbecue meal provided by Woolworths and cooked by Apex Club members.
