6 NT NEWS. Saturday, December 22, 2012. www.ntnews.com.au Help is at hand for those niggly car problems. Email asksmithy@carsguide.com.au Dont settle for worse economy Dont accept their view that its still running in, thats away of fobbing you off Q: I am concerned about the amount of fuel my 2011 Nissan Navara diesel is consuming. Its stickered values are 7.5, 9.0 and 11.7 L/100 km for extra-urban, combined and urban driving conditions respectively, but the best I have been able to achieve has been 10.9L/ 100 km on a long trip down the highway with the cruise control set at 100 km/h. I notified the dealer at both the 1000 km and 10,000 km services and their response has been that the engine is still needs running in. The car is now due for its 20,000 km service and there has been no noticeable improvement. Is there something that can be done to solve this problem, or should I have Nissan fix or replace a faulty product? Sebastian Azagra, e-mail. A: Tell the dealer of your concerns when you take it in for servicing and ask that they do a full diagnostic check on the car. Dont accept their view that its still running in, thats a way of fobbing you off. Its possible you have a faulty sensor thats throwing the fuel economy out. Q: Over the past year my 2010 dual-fuel VE Commodore sedan had intermittent problems when running on gas. Sometimes the engine runs very rough and vibrates as if one of the gas injectors is not working. The engine check light comes on and I have to pull over, switch the engine off and switch over to petrol. No error codes are recorded. Under warranty they have replaced injectors, bench tested and serviced injectors, replaced gas pressure switch and carried out a compression and leak down test, but all to no avail. Now the dealer is suggesting I drive it there while experiencing the problem. I have endeavoured to do that only for the fault to rectify itself before I get there. Can you offer any suggestions as to its cause and what to do next? I am desperate for a resolution to the problem. This has gone on far too long. Fred Hogendoorn, e-mail. A: As its not a consistent problem you would have to think theres an issue such as a connection or a sensor thats faulty. The factory system used by Holden is an Impco one, designed and developed by Impco for Holden. I would bypass the Holden dealer and go to an accredited Impco dealer and have them check it for you. Q: I am getting a shudder in the steering of my 2005 Subaru Impreza GL when turning slowly such as coming out of a parking spot at a shopping centre. I took it to a mechanic to have it serviced and was told that the front diff is on its way out and that it was a common fault with Subarus. I contacted a Subaru dealer and explained the problem to the service department and they said it could be a solenoid at the rear of the transmission or the clutch could be grabbing and would cost between $750-$950 to fix. These quoted prices seem to me to be quite extravagant. Have you heard of Subarus having front diff and transmission problems when the vehicle has only done 122,000 km. I would appreciate your opinion.
