The job is to be run from the companys headquarters in Fornebu, Norway. Aker also won two other major contracts on the Ichthys venture totalling $147.5 million. New roles for coroner By ALISON BEVEGE Greg Cavanagh TERRITORY Coroner Greg Cavanagh is set to become a very busy man. He is the new president of the Mental Health Review Tribunal and chairman of the Lands, Planning and Mining Tribunal. I was asked to take on the responsibility in addition to being the coroner, and I was pleased to accept the appointments as it gave me new and interesting work to do, he said. But the workloads of both tribunals are set to skyrocket. After Mr Cavanagh handed down his coronial findings on the death in custody of Kwementyaye Briscoe in Sep tember, Alice Springs police began taking many drunks to hospital instead of protective custody. The CLP Government has since announced that habitual drunks are to be put into compulsory rehabilitation and treated. That means the workload of the Mental Health Tribunal is likely to increase greatly, as it reviews invol untary mental health patient admissions. The Lands, Planning and Mining Tribunal, which hears appeals against Development Consent Authority decisions, will also have its workload increased. It has been given jurisdiction over residential building consumer protection disputes when new consumer protection laws for the building industry come into effect on January 1. The new rules are intended to protect homebuyers from builders who go bankrupt, die or stop work halfway through a project. The collapsed brick wall at the new prison construction site at Holtze Super prison safety fears By ALYSSA BETTS DARWINS new super prison isnt off to a great start one wall has already fallen over. The Electrical Trades Union has taken a number of photos at the construction site during the past months it says shows poor commitment to safety. Apart from a concrete brick wall collapse, the pictures also show images of small, unprotected pits, a possible fall hazard and a crane apparently lifting a load above a workers head. ETU NT organiser Michael Haire said it was just luck no one has been killed or seriously hurt yet. Five kilometres back up the road, the Inpex accommodation village site seems like another world, Mr Haire said. Much cleaner, more organised, more safetyfocused thats another big difference we see time and time again between union and non-union sites. But Baulderstone/ Sitzler, which is building the 1000-bed prison in Holtze, said safety was its top priority. There has been history of friction between unions and the joint venture 300 workers downed tools in August over a lack of an agreement that standardised pay and conditions. WorkSafe said some of the photos appeared to be inconclusive, while preliminary inquiries into a wall collapse during a storm indicated no breach of duty on the part of the joint venture. Baulderstone spokesman Jon Clarke said the company remained focused on delivering positive, successful projects for our clients in a safe manner. Department of Business acting chief executive Doug Phillips said WorkSafe inspectors had conducted a number of site visits since construction began. But Mr Haire said: If NT WorkSafe have been out there doing their job, and the joint venture is so focused on safety, why is the job such a tip? The photos speak for themselves. Construction site standards in the Territory lagged behind those of other states, he said.
