Colin McDonald said the museum had been in decline since Labor started meddling in its administration a decade ago and the CLP cuts were the final straw. He said the new Government was chopping money from a carcass. The life of the museum has been sapped away, he said. Five staff are believed to have been made redundant. A source told the NT News that the dumped workers learnt of their fate from a press release sent out by Arts and Museums Minister Matt Conlan. No manager at the museum knew this was coming. How more un-Australian can you be? the source said. Mr Conlan said $186,000 would be cut from library and photography services. A review of spending would look for other savings. There is a clear need for the Department of Arts and Museums to operate more efficiently and focus on its core business, Mr Conlan said. Mr McDonald said the art gallery had built up a worldclass collection of Aboriginal, South-east Asian and Pacific island art. It also had a large art book library. And he said the museum had carried out marvellous scientific work. But Mr McDonald said a great community-owned and community-engaged institution was a shell of its old self. The lawyer, who collected his artworks during many years of travelling in Asia, said the museum was founded by then chief minister Paul Everingham to be a centre of excellence. It was vibrant, it was a living arts and science institution, he said.
