Tinkler could lose his grip on Newcastles premier sport ing teams if he fails to pay $2.7 million to the Australian Tax Office by February 20. The ATO yesterday filed documents in the Federal Court in Sydney to wind up Tinklers Newcastle Knights, the Newcastle Jets, and their parent company, Hunter Sports Group. It was claimed the Knights owe more than $1.4 million in unpaid taxes, the Jets owe $1.063 million, while Hunter Sports Group is $184,000 behind in ATO payments. The ATO followed up with five more wind-up applications in the Federal Court, for $1.16 million in unpaid taxes from Tinkler companies. Tinkler was forced to say the cheque is in the mail a familiar retort when credi tors circle his companies, or in the case of his Patinack Farm racing stud, when staff and contractors complain they havent been paid. We advise that any outstanding sum will be paid as soon as possible well before the reported hearing date, a spokesman for HSG said. But, despite the push from the ATO to wind up the NRL and A-League teams, the clubs say their futures are not in jeopardy. ContinuedPage54 TAXING TIMES
