Snake catcher Justin Rutherford said four particularly toxic western brown snakes had been removed from houses in suburbs across town. Mr Rutherford said he had a call from one man who had been listening to music in his home when a metrelong western brown slithered out from behind his stereo. He (the snake) was obviously listening to or, should say I, feeling t h e t u n e s , M r Rutherford from the Alice Springs Reptile Centre said. He said the coldblooded creatures were scattered just everywhere in Alice Springs following spells of rain over the past few months. Theres bucket loads of them, but we rarely see them, he said. I t s j u s t A l i c e Springs. If you dont like snakes, you dont live here. Mr Rutherford said snakes in Alice Springs were mainly venomous and 2000 western brown snakes roughly one twelfth of the towns human population reside there. The creatures grow up to 1.5m long and can d e l i v e r a f a t a l venomous bite but Mr Rutherford said nine times out of 10 they dry bite humans. Its a sizeable animal to have in your house, he added. Mr Rutherford said he had also received calls from residents s p o t t i n g m i l d l y venomous curl snakes (they can still certainly pack a wallop) and whip snakes. He warned residents to wear shoes when walking outside at night, especially after the rain. The Alice Springs Reptile Centre has been contracted by the NT Parks and Wildlife Service to remove snakes and other reptiles from residential areas since 2000. Mr Rutherford said the snake team moved the snakes to selected areas outside of town. Dial the 24-hour snake phone on 040 7983 276.
