They were only five days old when mum Tilly was killed after being hit by a car, leaving owner Susie Thompson heartbroken. Susie admits that when she and daughter Kyana first took over the puppy-rearing duties there were several nights when she sat giving the orphans their three hourly feeds with tears rolling down her cheeks. But the fact that they needed her so desperately kept her focused on the happiness of having the pups rather than the loss of Tilly. And the tragedy could have been far worse, she says. If Tilly had been hit by the car before she gave birth the whole canine family might have been wiped out. Only two of the pups have names. The lone male, the runt of the litter, is Pepper because his dads name is Jack. And then theres Lilly who will be staying with Susie and Kyana. All the rest are simply 'cutie' or 'sweetie' until just before Christmas when their new owners welcome and name them. And there is no danger that Susie will lose touch with her brood. All of the puppies are going to people who live locally meaning there will be plenty of opportunity for family reunions.
