LEISEL READY TO DRAW THE CURTAIN Page 54 NT is facing sudden death FOOTBALL By JESSWEBSTER NEAFL grand finalists Territory Thunder may be forced to play a qualifying round before joining the top VFL, SANFL and WAFL teams in the quarter-finals for next years Foxtel Cup. As the NT News revealed this month, the revamped tournament involving the best State League clubs around the country has been reduced from 16 teams to 10, and all matches moved to Tuesday nights in order to lift the profile and interest of the nationally televised knockout competition. The draw will be released today and it is widely tipped that the NEAFL Northern Conference clubs NT Thunder and Southport, Eastern Conference premier Queanbeyan, and TFL champions Burnie will play each other in a first-round qualifier. The two winners move into the next round of eight teams to play against the best southern clubs. The new structure means the six VFL, SANFL and WAFL teams will play a maximum three games to claim the championship. The remaining clubs will need to play four games. In a major tick of approval for the new changes, the highest ranked qualifiers from every State League have agreed to play in the third instalment of the Foxtel Cup. In the previous two years, the top SANFL clubs declined to participate. AFL reserve teams do not take part in the competition, meaning Port Melbourne and Werribee (VFL), Norwood and West Adelaide (SANFL), Claremont and East Fremantle (WAFL), NT Thunder, Southport, Queanbeyan, and Burnie will contest in 2013. NT Thunder progressed to the quarter-finals in the inaugural competition in 2011 before crashing out in the first round against Port Melbourne in Darwin this year. Claremont reversed its grand final loss to Williamstown in 2011 when it beat Werribee to take out this years championship. Big names selected inNTFL: Page49
