BEER delivered to your desk on a designated drinks trolley is many peoples idea of a dream job, but for the employees of one software company its simply part of the daily routine. To create the best atmosphere in the office and to ensure people work with each other instead of against each other, new Atlassian employees in their first week push a cart around offering beers to colleagues to get to know them better. The company has also developed a beer test to decide which job candidates they will pick for the job. After interviewing a jobseeker they ask each other: Could I share a beer with this person? The focus on improving friendships at the awardwinning employer is backed up by the numbers, with a survey from Jobsite.co.uk finding 70 per cent of workers say their mates at work are crucial to enjoying a happy working life. This compares with only 55 per cent saying money is the most important thing. The survey also found that two-thirds of people would turn down a job offer with a pay rise to remain working with people they liked and respected. Atlassian vice-president of talent Joris Luijke said encouraging a friendly workplace culture had been the key to their success. With the beer test they dont have to be similar to the person interviewing them, they just have to be interesting and have something to offer, he said. They need to be able to be a great mate a workmate in the workplace. We have beer on tap here and that makes people come in and stay ... It nurtures relationships within the organisation. We want to make sure there are these natural interactions and friendships built over time organically. Recruitment company Hays regional director Carolyn Dickason said that the beer move so successfully used was part of a trend of employers investing in the social element of their staff. The respect you receive from your colleagues is very important, she said. Its about respect and how you treat each other internally and that adds a huge amount to productivity and the bottom line of a company. Its about recognition, not necessarily from your manager, but from your peers. Its what you think of each other that is more important.
