The information was made public in indictments released hours after BP announced it was paying $US4.5 billion ($A4.36 billion) in a settlement with the United States government over the disaster. A federal indictment unsealed in New Orleans claims BP well site leaders Robert Kaluza and Donald Vidrine acted negligently in their supervision of key safety tests performed on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig before the explosion killed 11 workers in April 2010. The indictment says the pair failed to phone engineers onshore to alert them of problems in the drilling operation. Another indictment charges David Rainey, who was BPs vicepresident of exploration for the Gulf of Mexico, on charges of obstruction of Congress and making false statements. The indictment claims the former executive lied to federal investigators when they asked him how he calculated a flow rate estimate for BPs blown-out well in the days after the April 2010 disaster. In a mass cooking display that would put MasterChef to shame, 2000 South Koreans have made 140 tonnes of kimchi, a traditional Korean cabbage dish, in a park in Seoul Picture: JUNG YEON-JE/AFP Daredevil pops out US: A professional daredevil has jumped from a hot air balloon 3km above the Californian desert using nothing but an umbrella to try to break his fall. Erik Roner was testing if the umbrella would act as a parachute. It did but then collapsed, so he opened his back-up parachute. Drink test, 13 deaths WASHINGTON: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating 13 deaths that may be linked to consumption of an energy drink called 5-hour Energy. There have been a total of 92 patient reports, including 33 hospital admissions and 13 deaths. Eurozone sags again EUROPE: The 17country eurozone has fallen back into recession for the first time in three years as fallout continues from the regions financial crisis. And there are fears the woes will deepen, as surveys point to worse conditions and high unemployment in many countries.
