A suspended sentence is usually commuted to life in prison after several years. Gu Kailai received the sentence and a family aide was given nine years imprisonment for killing Neil Hey wood, a former family associate, said He Zhengsheng, a lawyer for the Heywood family who attended the sentencing in this eastern China city. The sentencing closes one chapter of Chinas biggest political crisis in two decades, but also leaves open questions over the fate of Gus husband, Bo Xilai, who was dismissed in March as the powerful Communist Party boss of the major city of Chongqing. His dismissal and his wifes murder trial come at a sensitive time in China, with party leaders handing over power soon to a younger generation. At one time Bo was considered a candidate for a top position. State media said Gu con fessed to homicide at a oneday trial on August 9. It was reported she and Heywood had a dispute over money and Heywood allegedly threatened her son. The family aide, Zhang Xiaojun, also confessed after being charged as an accessory. Chinese leaders might have decided to impose a prison term instead of death for fear that a more severe penalty might stir outrage or make Gu look like a scapegoat for her husbands misdeeds, analysts said. The party said Bo was removed because of some unspecified violations. If you execute her, what about Bo Xilai? You should also execute Bo Xilai, because . . . its highly likely that people will think that she was just a scapegoat for the whole thing, Cheng Li, an expert in Chinese elite politics at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, said before the verdict. Gus arrest and the ouster of her husband sparked the biggest political turbulence in China since the bloody crackdown on the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests in 1989. Gu lured the victim to a Chongqing hotel, got him drunk and then poured cyanide into his mouth. Policy in question ST LOUIS, Missouri: Missouri Republican congressman Todd Akin has questioned whether women can become pregnant if raped. Akin, an anti-abortionist, said in a television interview that pregnancy from rape is really rare and if a woman is raped, her body has ways to shut that whole thing down. Rival Senate candidate for Missouri, Democrat Claire McCaskill, said: Akins record is riddled with policies and votes that hurt women. PJs in public? AUCKLAND: People who pop out to the supermarket or ATM in their pyjamas are the subject of heated debate in a city on New Zealands North Island, with the locals split on whether its acceptable to parade sleepwear in public. Some businesses accepted the trend but others were disturbed by it, Heart of Gisborne manager Ken Huberts said. Gisborne Deputy Mayor Nola Aston was less concerned. Pyjamas have become a fashionable thing, she said. Julian Assange addresses the media from a balcony of Ecuadores Embassy and, inset, supporters wearing Guy Fawkes masks listen to him speak Stop witch-hunt, Assange tells Obama LONDON: Julian Assange has demanded America stop its WikiLeaks witch-hunt, speaking from a balcony of Ecuadores embassy. The Brisbane-born WikiLeaks founder, 41, issued a plea that President Barack Obama rein in American whistleblowers, in a speech of almost 10 minutes beamed live around the globe. I ask President Obama to do the right thing. The United States must renounce its witch-hunt against WikiLeaks, Mr Assange said. He greeted a media throng and supporters with a thumbs-up from a low-level balcony of the embassy, telling them: I am here because I cannot be closer to you. As dozens of British police watched, Mr Assange thanked Ecuador for accepting his application for protection, after the South American nation granted him diplomatic asylum last week, about two months after he arrived at the embassy seeking sanctuary. He also thanked the worldwide network of WikiLeaks supporters and asked that an FBI investigation into the website be dissolved. The United States must vow that it will not seek to prosecute our staff or our supporters, he said. The United States must pledge before the world that it will not pursue journalists for shining a light on the secret crimes of the powerful. Christine Assange, who watched the speech in Brisbane, praised her son.
