Tobacco companies yesterday lost their High Court bid to oppose plain packaging laws. One brand will look like the next when all brand marks and logos are removed from packaging. Graphic health warnings will instead cover the boxes with brand names written in tiny generic fonts. Territorians have the highest smoking rates in Australia at 33.4 per cent. More than half of all indigenous adults, 54.6 per cent, smoke. The national rate is just 15 per cent. Tobacconist Colin Thompson said plain packaging wouldnt make a difference to smoking rates. Consumers they dont give a rats a***, he said. They smoke the cigarettes, not the packet. Its just an inconvenience for the retailer to see which is which, what rack to put them on or where to find them. But Australian Medical Association (NT) president Peter Beaumont hailed the decision as a win for health. People doubt it will have an effect, but Big Tobacco thinks it will or they wouldnt spend so much challenging it, he said.Prof Grahame Webb will speak at a pub forum on crocs Picture: ELISE DERWIN Salties and beer can mix A PUBLIC forum about crocodiles will be held tonight in a pub to mark National Science Week in true NT style. Punters will be able to buy a pint, pull up a bar stool and have a natter with croc expert Professor Grahame Webb from 6.30pm. The event will be held at Shenannigans in Mitchell St in Darwin. Prof Webb said he would discuss where the Territory would be without crocs. Whichever way you cut the cake, croc stories sell, he said. The north has got wonderful things about it, but theres not a lot of things that attract a lot of attention from people from Finland. Crocs play a big role in that. He said Territory scientists had led the way in understanding the reptiles. When the hunting period stopped, there hadnt been a lot of research on crocs, he said. There was lots of traditional knowledge, but not a lot of scientific research. The Territory has shown a lot of leadership in croc conservation. Science Week will run until Sunday.
