NT NEWS. 13 P U B : NTNE-WS-DA-TE:6-AGE:13 CO-LO-R: C-M Y-K Blokeswon over By DARREN DEVLYN WINNERS & Losers didnt seem to have a hope of building a male following. It launched last year as a drama about the bond shared by four women. Cast members Blair McDonough and Tom Wren (pictured) were, if you like, the proverbial meat in the chick flick sandwich. As the premiere season unfolded and Wren (Dr Doug) and McDonough (Matt) worked their way into strong storylines, it became apparent Winners & Losers had a much broader appeal than initially thought. When I first read the scripts for the show I was thinking theres not a bloke in the world who will watch this, Wren explains. But I began to change my mind. I was at the footy and standing at a urinal when this bloke next to me leaned over and said, I hope you get her (the girl in the show), mate. I said, Um, thanks, cheers. I think the first season was very much into the girls and then the guys began to have a bit more of a say in things and were given the chance to carry a bit more story. Its been great fun to explore. Season One saw Matt call off his engagement to Bec (Zoe TuckwellSmith), who found brief solace in the arms of Doug. After a car accident, Bec realised she was still in love with Matt. Bec had her dream wedding and fell pregnant. If only Matt were the father. I did have a bet with Zoe that the writers would not go down this track, Wren says. I had to hand over a bottle of champagne. Winners & Losers, SCTV Darwin, Tuesday, 8.30pm
